The Hillsboro Buc-ee’s manager, Megan, had the opportunity to mitigate what I had hoped was just poor communication and signage but instead, she chose to confirm that Buc-ee’s values trickery over honesty. Buc-ee’s offers individually wrapped fudge and according to the sign sitting DIRECTLY BESIDE THEM, if you buy 4 pieces of fudge, you get 2 pieces for free. After picking out my flavors, and waiting on the gentleman to cut one that wasn’t pre-wrapped, I learned the special does not apply to the individually wrapped fudge pieces. To get 2 slices free, all 6 slices have to go in a box and none of them can be individually wrapped. Since this is not written anywhere on the sign sitting quite literally in the middle of all the individually wrapped pieces, I found this hard to believe so I asked the manager, mostly in the hopes this was a misunderstanding versus a blatant case of bait switch with some false advertising thrown in for good measure. But since Megan told me this was in fact, true, because “otherwise, the cashiers wouldn’t know how to ring it up” while pointing to a tiny bar code on the bottom of an individually wrapped fudge. I pointed out it would be easier for her to explain the purchase price to the cashier than for me to explain why Buc-ee’s thinks it’s okay to lie to customers at a time when most people are well past their limit for dishonesty, but we failed to come to an agreement on the matter so I left without the fudge. However, I also left with 2 burning questions: 1) Do you believe Buc-ee’s is being intentionally misleading and 2) Do you find yourself less tolerant of these type of shenanigans than...

Right across from the TA Truck Stop. At the very least, they could’ve put a crosswalk like the Buc-ee’s and Love’s near Atlanta, GA. But this communicates to me that they don’t want truckers at all — even the ones parked across the street. Very discouraging.

For me, as a truck driver, I’m most upset with Buc-ee’s because their establishment is incredibly large, similar to TAs, Love’s, and Flying J. With all that space, all those bathrooms, all those food and drink options, it’s insensitively ungrateful to not have truck parking available at Buc-ee’s locations. We’re not even asking for showers—just a place to park and buy a good lunch/dinner/breakfast. It’s like the Lakewood Church refusing to house homeless individuals impacted by the hurricane in Houston, TX all those years ago. You have the space, the extra necessities, but you shut your doors to truckers (especially considering the lack of truck parking epidemic; this could’ve helped prevent truckers from parking on the shoulders of ramps—putting other cars and themselves at risk despite the legality of it). In conclusion, Buc-ee’s is all about appearances and status/popularity.

If anything, I just feel relieved in my dignity that I’m withholding and saving $40 from being spent at Buc-ee’s. Because that’s how much I spent on average before I became a truck driver. But not anymore.

Note: I’m not commenting about the employees. Be nice to them. Just the location and lack of crosswalk. Sort of a thorn in the eye to see how unwanted a trucker is. And I’ve seen a lot of hard-working men...

So here's the truth on the newest Buc-ee's at Hillsboro! Most of the employees are above friendly (the meat area let us stand there un-noticed for about 4 or 5 min before a lead helped us) and although this is a bit of a different design from most it only rates 3 stars for the following reasons...

There are flys all over the food areas and in the coffee stations. This is mainly because the standard air blowers that are on other Buc-ee's entries and exits are missing. They are obviously having some HVAC issues because it is swampy and warm inside even though it is only 73 degrees outside right now. There are some items missing from this Buc-ee's (possibly from stock issues) the dried mango slices or basically anything that doesn't have chili all over it are in short supply here. Now Buc-ee's usually has the cleanest bathrooms around but my stall was short on toilet paper and the sink area had water everywhere. I'm attaching photos of the chopped brisket and the box label that states sliced brisket. Most would say that's not a big deal... however, there is a $3 to $4 difference in price on the board. I believe it said chopped was $21.99 a pound and I was clearly charged $25.99 per pound. I'm saddened that in ALL our years of enjoying Buc-ee's that this mass influx of country wide stores has left the newest one in our home state lacking....
