Hood River Golf Course — Local services in Hood River

The "old" golf course in Hood River, where I grew up, was like a good friend to me. We spent a lot of time together when I was growing up. It contributed greatly to who I am today. I make it a point to try to make a pilgrimage almost every year to say "hi" to my old friend. It made me feel good.

Today I came up to visit. My course in Gresham is closed this week for aeration, and, the weather is wonderful. Seemed like a good opportunity to visit. A nice person offered to join me. I enjoyed his company. On the 6th fairway a pull cart I rented fell apart. The bottom lost it supports. So, my playing partner offer me an opportunity to ride in his cart for the remaining 3 1/2 holes. We set the broken pull cart aside and finished the nine hole round. When we came back to get the cart, it was gone. We correctly assumed that a ground crew person retrieved it.

Upon getting to my car the "lady" proceeded to give me a tongue lashing about leaving the cart there, and how bad a person I was for not pausing my round and walking the broken cart back to the clubhouse. In addition, she insisted I pay her for using my partner's cart. Then she attacked my integrity. After not being able to reach her husband she demanded I give her $20.00. So, I did; after I explained my history with the course and the fact that I am a consistent return customer. Next comes her relating the hard work they have put into the course and how I dont understand what they are under to keep the course in condition with "only six of us".

Only upgrading to two stars because the course was pretty good...... For the rest...... I called on a Friday, asked do you have tee times available for tomorrow. The lady very rudely said "be more specific." I kind of chuckled and said how about morning? Her response, even more rude then the first was, "you need to be more specific." At this point I figured I would throw a number out there. I said how about 9. Her response, was "how about 9:10. I said I will take it. Myself and my two sons showed up 25 minutes early. I'm assuming the same lady that was rude on the phone was rude again and said, "You are late. I have you down for 8:10". I kind of chuckled and said well, that's wrong. Is there anything we can do. Kindly she started us off on the back 9. My 18 year old sons ID was checked more intently than if he was being stopped by a police officer. We finally get out and I noticed the key looked fairly weak. I put it in, turned it and it broke. I was able to get the broken piece out. Apologetically, I went in and apologized and said I just turned it and it broke. Very rudely she responded, "no you didn't. I watched you force it." I chuckled again, and said no I didn't. At this point, I believe her husband, the other owner arrives and says again rudely, "you owe us $10 for that." I just said ok. I paid the $10 and as the man was walking out he turned to me and said AGAIN RUDELY "that's what happens when you are in a hurry." At this point, I looked at my sons and decided, lets golf. Forget it. My boys and I enjoyed golfing, but after this experience I would rather pay double and never go to this...

One of the most poorly maintained golf courses I’ve ever been to. The greens are like sponges with balls plugging halfway into the ground on the approach. Bunkers are always wet as well and the fairways are bone dry.

Beyond course conditions, this place has the most unfriendly staff I have ever come across. Every time I walk in there it’s like it’s a burden that they even have customers. Unbelievably rude. Don’t even bother with this course and go to Indian Creek.

Editing since I can’t respond to this asinine reply. The reply below from ownership just further emphasizes my sentiment -

I have brought my 4 year old daughter to play here 4 times in the last year. Every time the gentleman at the counter charges a cart fee, not $40 for a 4 year old with no clubs who wants to learn about the game of golf and spend some quality time with their dad. You assumed that my child would “use the carts as a jungle gym, and make sand castles in the bunkers.”

2 weekends ago I brought my injured brother in law as a ride along and was charged the same cart fee, not a full round fee. To which you responded “well they charged you wrong.” I understand maybe making this error once, but every single time? Seems there needs to be some alignment between staff on what your actual policy is.
