Hawk's Grocery & Smokehouse — Local services in Hydetown

I grew up on a farm just up the road from Hawks Grocery. I would ride my bike down the hill with a little money I earned on the farm to buy penny candy, beef jerky and candy cigarettes. Those trips were the best. I always requested Hawks Grocery ham loaf for my birthday dinner growing up. (If you haven’t had ham loaf you have to try it from Hawks. It is amazing. Full stop.)

That was almost 30 years ago. My family moved away and I hadn’t been back in years. When I was back in town recently, I checked to see if Hawks was still open, hoping it might be but not holding my breath. So many little places like this can’t stand up to the tides of change and big retailers.

IT HAS! Not only that but it has stayed almost exactly as I left it (in the best way possible.) You can still fill a paper bag with penny candy (though it all costs more these days ;)). The beef jerky is still the best and still comes in paper bags. They still sell CANDY CIGARETTES! And of course they still have their Ham Loaf.

There is a lot more good that could be said about this little gem, but I’ll leave it here. Here’s to Hawks Grocery! Thanks for filling my childhood with good memories and standing the test of time like all the best things do.

This little hometown store is the best! The ppl go over and above to get what you need! And Everyone is kind and pleasant! It taled you back to the day when that's all there was ,little stores ,diners, cafe's and small drug stores! And everyone had a big smile and a happy hello with a skip to it.Ill take this hometown store any day over the BIG grocery stores ! And the butcher can't go without saying how above and beyond he goes to get you what you may need in the meat...

Nice little store can't wait to go back with a little more money.... An impressive selection of meats and sausages.... Frozen soups I can't wait to try the stuffed pepper soup I was told was very good. Can't wait to go back and buy some of that Maple sausage. we bought a chunk of smoked cheese Italian blend it was so good bought some beef jerky to snack on that was delicious just had the red raspberry jam on some toast this morning it was very good !!!
