Five-Star Scenery, Three-Star Experience
Lydick Bog is a gorgeous and unique ecosystem. The floating walkways that take you over the water are fantastic for photography and birding, especially at sunrise and sunset. The forested loop trails are lovely, and the facilities (exceptionally clean bathrooms, picnic shelter) are top-notch.
However, the experience is severely hampered by an overwhelming number of biting insects. Once you enter the wooded trails, expect to be swarmed by vicious mosquitoes, black flies, and gnats. This is especially true in the early morning and late evening—precisely the most beautiful times to be there.
This place is a true gem, but I can't give it a perfect score when the bugs are aggressive enough to drive you out of the park. My advice: Visit for the unique beauty, but do NOT underestimate the bugs. Arm yourself with heavy-duty repellent...
Read moreNice place to take a walk. There is an easy path to follow for about a mile and a half walk. There are several platforms that extend our over wetlands and a small lake to give a better view. While walking you need to be careful of the tree roots that extend across the walking path. There are some small hills on the trail. In the summer you will need to have bug spray. If it has rained recently the path can be very muddy in some areas. The parking lot is not very big and the road into the parking lot is marked with a sign. It is a gravel road that actually looks like a driveway. There are covered picnic tables available but I didn't notice any place that you could grill. There is a portable outhouse near the...
Read moreIt was a very hot Hike at Lydick bog nature preserve not far across the state line into Indiana. This was part of the #chikamingopenlands #10trail challenge. The trail here is just over 2 miles out and back with a loop trail at the end of the linear trail. This would be a good place to come back in late fall or early spring as you really can’t get a good look at the bog with all the foliage on the trees. There are some moderate hills here so along with that and the heat today it was a decent workout. This is dog on leash friendly, kid friendly, free, there is a Port o John at the beginning of the entrance, and fairly decent size...
