All in all, very pleased. A few small issues but not really anything to fuss over. Upon tasting the vension&elk, most was extremely fresh & tasty, perhaps the best I've ever had! However, a couple tasted as if it had been overly-aged(the classic"fish" taste) That being said, most of the odd-tasting ones were still edible just not what it normally tastes like. At the end of the day it's taken me so long to find safe, fresh meat, that they deserve the 5 stars just for providing that. Im so glad i found this place because the local markets & distributors i would normally purchase from are having serious problems with the 2022 supply chain issues...aka most things are going bad on the trucks before they ever get to the shelves. I have a rare condition that forces me to depend on red meat for 85% of my diet. Living off of jerky for months was doable to scrape by but very depressing. to find this carnivores haven in a time like this means more than I can express. I've only ordered once so far but as long as their stuff stays this fresh, I'll keep coming back. UPDATE: I have now tested quite a bit of meat...and I have to say that it really depends on the lot you get. Overall, i think its still worth coming back, especially bc in 2022 every place I know, including those with a reputation of being the freshest on the market, have one issue or another...1st the good side: in one month, i ate about 35 packs of venison that were extremely fresh. Smelled fresh tasted fresh & it was not shy of carnivore's heaven...only found about 5 or so that had been truly rancid which is sadly 10x better odds than my local market. The ground elk is another story tho...it appears to be preserved with something very odd...kinda reminds me of antifreeze but I'm sure it's not lol. Its an acidic undoubtedly chemical taste & even at times just tastes bitter. Speaking of strange chemicals...some of the venison smelled unnaturally sweet even as raw, like a bakery sweet. But otherwise tasted ok. It really makes me wonder ok who r their various suppliers n what do the carcasses go thru before theyre finally taken to this processor? do they purchase whole elk from a farm (& yes while they technically do the processing), perhaps the farmer did the actual slaughter, then doused it in unconventional type acids while it hung in a freezer somewhere awaiting transit? Are there hunters just dropping off dead deer for a price tag or are THEY the ones harvesting the deer? I do not know the answer to any of these questions. All i know is while some lots were the BEST meat id EVER had...others were some of the WORST. I keep my rating at 5 stars only bc I think in normal times, I'd never have an issue. Any other yr I would've knocked it down to 4 stars but...it wouldn't be fair to point blame in a time when even the best r falling victim to the crazy logistics of 2022. If a farmer or hunter is cutting corners, im not even sure they're aware of it becase most people will not explain their complaints. I hope what I've written helps them figure out, for ex, why there are so many bad reviews on specifically their ground ELK. U have to know the source of what went wrong to ever...
Read moreThe only reason why I gave them 3 stars is because they provided false and misleading information on their website. Let me explain. If you go on their website and proceed to check out they have a list of information they tell you. On that list they tell you that when they ship it out it will arrive UPS ground in 2 days. It also says that if you place an order on Wednesday after 9:00 a.m. they will ship it out the following business day except for venison orders or game meats orders will be shipped out on following Monday. My story is on Wednesday October 21st 2020 past 9:00 a.m. I have made a purchase for wild boar meat and elk meat and went to PayPal to pay that way. I know my bank authorized and paid them as well as PayPal completed the payment because on my bank account it was posted on October 23rd 2020 which was Friday which if it's posted means they made payment. I called shaffer farms on Saturday October 24th 2020 so a lady picked up the phone and told me that they only ship out wild game meats especially venison meats Monday through Wednesday and that they would ship out my order on Monday October 26th 2020. They lied because their own website says if it was shipped out on Monday and UPS ground takes 2 days to get to you then I should have received it already but instead I received an email saying they just finalized processing my order Wednesday October 28th 2020 which should have been done days ago. I also want to mention that the individual who sent the email to me that according to Google could not verify if that was the person who sent it. I did not receive my order yet and it's past due also not to mention that I only live a 2-hour drive away from them. They don't follow their own information they provide to you as a customer stated on...
Read moreDisappointed to leave this review and low rating. Made a special 1.5 hour round trip to their store to try a couple specialty items they offer. Purchased several packs of elk hot dogs, a pack of smoked elk sausage, pack of elk patties and a single snack stick.
The snack stick was delicious. Unfortunately, my high hopes for the rest of the items have been dashed. The smoked sausage is decent but is tough and contains some unappealing seasoning. The hot dogs have a very odd flavor, which combined with their tough casings, make them nearly inedible. We have two more packs in the freezer and I'm not sure what we will do with them. The patties are the worst of the bunch. Very off putting flavor, sort of a combination of "very gamey" and freezerburn. Not an exaggeration to say that they're the worst burgers I've ever had, even after trying to disguise the flavor with all sorts of condiments.
As a hunter I have eaten a lot of venison and am familiar with the taste. Wish I could give them more stars as we were excited to try these products and really wanted to like them. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend anything other than their snack sticks. Certainly not worth the...
