Not going to lie, I was really looking forward to playing here. A course I played the day before, a gentleman told me it was one of his favorite courses to play, but I don’t think I’ll ever come back to play another round.
I’m from out of town, never been here to this course before, got held up in traffic (starting an hour away at friends), showed up 10 mins before my tee-time (yes, that’s my fault). This is where it I already knew it was going to be a bad round of golf. The staff/greater at the club drop instantly treated my group (4) with disrespect and rudeness. Lady in the ProShop was awesome! The group behind us was a group of 2, more experienced gentlemen. We arrived at the starter who greeted us with a disgusted/disgruntled look and looked down at his watch then never said a word to us. Not hello, welcome, how are you… nothing! Again, just rude! So, I kindly asked if it would be ok if the group of two behind us could play through. He said ok. Off they went, then off we went. I’m not a pro. I’m an average 92 golfer, I play with another 92 golfer, a 103 golfer and his son, who is newish to golfer. Sometimes it’s going to take 4.5-5 hours for 18. We pulled up to the turn at 9 to grab some drinks, a hot dog and use the restrooms when a ranger pulls up and sits there, stares at our cart for a few minutes, waits for us to get out of our carts, order our things and start walking back to our carts before he approaches us to say we need to pick up the pace, because he got a call that we were hold groups up and we were on pace for a 5 hour round. Now, no problem! No one is in front of us cause there was a good group of 2 golfers in front of us who have played there often, and the group behind us was a group of women playing from the front tees practically running through the course. I don’t know what to tell ya! We were so irritated with it all we gave up trying to enjoy the day of golf on a course we had never played before and played hurry up scramble format. Not a good way to keep customers around. Best part of the day was Emily, the cart lady, she was super nice to us and Kevin, who met us at the end of 18 and at the cart drop. Thanks Kevin, stand up guy!
All in all, sorry Shanty Creek Cedar River…Poor Hospitality, rudeness, hurry up golf to push golfers and $ through is not our thing and not a place where we want to come back and play golf. Your course is beautiful, challenging and amazing… but the rest is a...
Read moreWe brought a group of 28 guys to Shanty Creek for two days of golf this past weekend, and while the courses themselves were beautiful, the overall service, food, and hospitality left a lot to be desired.
For a resort that markets itself as a travel destination for large groups, they do very little to make those groups feel welcome. The staff was not friendly or accommodating, and there seemed to be no effort to make our time there enjoyable. In particular, the Assistant Director of Golf, Jonathan, was incredibly rude to our group. Towards the end of one round, most of us were waiting on the final hole for the remaining groups to finish so we could all come in together. Jonathan approached us in an unfriendly, condescending manner, lecturing us as if we were teenagers rather than paying guests who brought a significant amount of business to the property. His attitude was ungrateful and unprofessional, and it left a very bad impression. If this is the person overseeing large group golf outings, it’s clear that some serious training in hospitality is needed.
The food and beverage experience was equally disappointing. The clubhouse and halfway house offerings were limited to hot dogs and burgers that had clearly been sitting in warmers for hours. For a destination that hosts big groups, you’d expect fresh options—at the very least, a grill going with something better than pre-made concession food. There were no beverage carts on the course, even though there were attendants around who could have easily been utilized for that. Additionally, there was no water or ice anywhere on the course, which is completely unacceptable for a golf resort of this size.
Shanty Creek has fantastic courses, but the lack of service, poor food and beverage options, and unfriendly staff make it hard to recommend for large golf groups. With a little effort and focus on hospitality, this could be an outstanding destination—but as it stands, we left feeling...
Read moreI generally don’t do reviews but I feel like this deserved a review as hopefully a wake up call. Played a round at the golf course and was extremely excited to play. The round cost was 137 for the round. It had rained earlier in the day. Showed up an hour early for the round and was told there was an hour delay which is fine since the course was wet from the rain. The round included range balls how ever my partner and myself were only give one basket of balls to split. We went and got a drink since we had pretty much 2 hours I thought, up stairs at the lounge which was good. After the drink we went to the range and were told by our friends who were also golfing that it now was only a 30 minute delay. Still no biggie. We go to the range and during warmup we are told by another group of friends that now it’s only 10 minute delay at this point we only have 10 minutes left to get ready for the round we leave the range and head straight to the putting green and starter house. Which then we are told we are on time so we have no time to warm up putting. The starter is rude to us as if we are late yet there is a group ahead of us that wasn’t there yet. So we have to wait for them. So atleast we got to putt but here is my issue I never heard from the course about the delay being removed not once. Also we were ready to go why am were we getting the attitude for being late yet we weren’t. Next we are never told there is no cart girl it was 95 degrees outside and I guess I shouldn’t have assumed a 137 dollar round wouldn’t have a beverage cart and should have packed my own drinks. Also there was 3 Marshalls but no beverage cart. I would have at least appreciated to be told there wasn’t one as i could have prepared. The course was nice for sure but it seemed every person besides the clerk was pissed and wanted nothing to do with it. I still had a great time on the course just was disappointed expected better from a...
