Assistant pro was the rudest person Iāve ever encountered working at a golf course in 25+ years playing golf. Threw a hissy fit to us about taking 3 carts because we wanted to keep our distance; we were all from out of town and no one mentioned a word about it when we checked in separately. Made it seem like there was a dire shortage āCarts donāt grow on treesā. There were at least a dozen other available carts when we tees of at 3:10 and when we finished there were upwards of 20. He wanted to get in a fight but we bit our tongues and acted like adults unlike him. Course was fine. Good conditions but way softer than it looks. Bunker surrounds are entirely too penal. The bunker is the penalty, you shouldnāt lose a ball in the surround. Greens are extreme but donāt run fast enough to take advantage of the slopes and 80% of the huge surfaces are unpinnable and donāt come into play. Drive an hour further west and play Wild Horse. 10x better course and no one will treat you like a little kid...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf you want to see an example of a once thriving golf course with an amazing design and optics, but it's now reduced to seeing the remnants of what used to be, by all means come to play Awarii Dunes.
As an avid golfer, it almost hurt to see the condition of this course. Collars around greens reduced to dried out mud. Fairways with much uncut/spiney crabgrass ball rollout is easily reduced by 10-15%. Greens inconsistently cut providing different speed expectations on each hole. Mens Tee boxes appeared closer to a bomb going off than a tee box and champions tees growing fescue.
Yes the course is in tough shape but my question is why? 8 years removed from hosted a D2 National Championship it truly hurts to see. I hope management/ownership provide this course with the love it truly needs or its guaranteed to be swallowed up by the the local sandy loam...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe way that Awarii Dunes has gone downhill should be studied. I remember golfing this course 5 years ago, and whoever manages this course should be fired. It's beyond just a drought of rain, and mismanagement. Tee Boxes are in poor shape, cart path are full of crater sized holes (gravel/sand cart path so its just laziness that this hasn't been fixed), bunkers aren't maintained, and greens are destroyed. They management of tee times is awful, i had two 2 sums before me, and then 3 different solos behind me, up my ass the entire time. I let one play through then realized that 2 more solos were behind him! Why not pair them up and speeed golf up. Its pretty simple, management has ruined this course.
P. S If your contemplating somewhere in kearney to golf, go ANYWHERE ELSE. It will be better maintained,...
