Wouldn't let me leave a zero star so they get the one. Where do I start? I worked here for a little more than 2 years. When hired I was told I may have to work a weekend every month or two. I could count how many Saturdays I actually had off in my time there. As "management" I was constantly blamed for how terrible everything was. Running 6 to 7 days a week doesn't leave maintenance time to fix anything. Instead, they implement a useless program to track what needs fixed. Wasting millions of dollars that could have gone to actually fixing the 30 year old equipment. The guy ordering parts for equipment doesn't so he can get a bigger bonus. This place treats the hourly like numbers and not the human beings they are. That alone should deter you from wanting to work here. Upper management is clueless and only concerned about pushing out product. They had a man die by the breakroom. They didnt even have the decency to close off the area while they tried to revive him. They didnt even shut down the plant for at least a shift to make sure the others were okay. The next day, they threw a birthday party for one of the front office salary employees. They were eating cake hours after a young man died 25 feet from their party. I've seen supervisors tell their employees to do unsafe things. And when the employee gets hurt, the employee was the one fired. The HR manager that was there was a blatant liar. Wrote me up for not wearing my PPE while on the production floor. She stated she told me multiple times to put my eye pro on. Which I admit, I had my eye pro flipped up. But, had she actually stopped to talk to me she would have found that I was palletizing and sweating as a result. The safety manual states an employee may raise their glasses when they become fogged. But she didnt speak with me. Instead, she snuck up front and told all the other front office dwellers that she was writing up a supervisor. She also disclosed information about me to individuals not working at the plant when I inquired about terminating my employment. HR's bonus is based off turnover rate. So they dont fire people. The current safety manager is an idiot. No safety experience prior to being hired as the safety manager. Plant manager's words not mine. She could not tell me where to find the simplest of things such as paperwork for a confined space entry. She didnt know we had a confined space entry rescue team. Yet, she told the plant manager when I called her out that she knew, and she was stating I couldn't use a certain employee. She was not informed who I would be using as she didnt know we even had people qualified. The assistant manager that just left to be a manager in Kansas City was dating the plant nurse. That nurse then became the safety manager. The plant manager failed as the operations manager of hot dogs at this very plant and was forced to take another job in r&d or get fired. Naturally, Smithfield put him in charge of the plant. Management under him have begun to jump ship, myself included. I recently turned in my badge with a note written much like this review. Stating how terrible the company and management are. I called out the plant manager for threatening me multiple times intimidating me with his job title. I have been away from the plant since Feb due to issues from my military service. I have a messed up knee, and this place had me walking 20 to 40 miles a week. I went from 220lbs to 160lbs in 8 months. I have proof of both. I once was experiencing heart attack symptoms at work. I texted the asst manager I might have to leave. Didnt even get a text back. So I finished my shift. Found out the next day I'm stage two hypertension. I have mental health issues stemming from the military. I had a VA appt that put me in a mental health crisis. When speaking to Michelle in HR the next day, her only concern was when I could come back to work. I was put on short term disability. That company told me my short term disability was ending despite the fact I am still in therapy. So i turned in my badge. Avoid this place...
