Dons Country Store — Local services in LaPlace

Great local supermarket located in Reserve. Don't expect a vast selection like you find in say a Winn Dixie or Walmart but you won't wait in long lines to check out either. The meat counter is excellent. There is usually a butcher on duty during weekdays that will cut your steaks to order. There is a fairly well stocked hardware section for small home repair projects. There's even a small selection of fishing tackle located on the wall just behind the check out line. You can pay your Entergy bill there from Monday to Friday but unfortunately not on the weekend. Don's used to make THE BEST hog head cheese I ever had. I grew up in Reserve La and have enjoyed it since I was a kid. My sister took a recent trip (28 - 30 July 2023) and asked if I wanted her to bring back a few packs for me ( I live in Texas now) and I said YES 😁. To my disappointment the recipe had changed. There were huge chunks of onions that were still crunchy and other hard bits. I was shocked because I will ONLY eat Don's hog head cheese no other. Friendly family-owned grocery store that also offers items that normally you would have to find a hardware store or specialty store to locate particular items you might need/want right now (not tomorrow), and since they are located in the middle of Central Avenue, well, you can get that candle that you want before your guests come over for dinner tonight, or maybe it's just a plain old can of black spray paint you may need to finish touching up a project you started but you don't have the patience or time to go to LaPlace to find it.
