Leakey Mercantile — Local services in Leakey

I had read a review or two of this long-standing Leakey (locals pronounce Lay-Key--say as it's spelled if you're talking to Google though) Mercantile. I am being generous with stars her, as in truth I didn't buy anything from this store yet. Reviews I saw prompting my checking it out all praised their pies and I wanted at least a slice of the burgundy pie, described as a combination blueberry and raspberry concoction. When I went, pecan and buttermilk pies along with a couple cakes were all that remained and neither interested me today. I liked the store as it was reminiscent of my family's store I was raised in, growing up there because both parents worked 6-16 hours there. They have a variety of fresh, frozen, and dry grocery. Busy browsing, I was in the stockroom inadvertently and can tell you it was clean and well maintained. I'll be back there tomorrow for some beef, likely Ribeyes and a pie. They're proud of both--$20 a pie and $18.95 per pound for ribeye--and I'll pay that. It may help keep a small local business's doors open+ I'll get to eat some favorites ribeye and pie or steak and cake. Stop in and check em out, as such as these grow fewer and farther between. Probably the best small town store I have been in. All the produce they had was fresh. Absolutely nothing showed signs of rotting produce. The meat dept. was also clean with so much to choose from. The butcher even tenderized my meat. Also super fresh. The store itself was fully stocked and nothing looked like it had been sitting for a long time. The place was clean with no dust on any products. My bill was high but only because I kept buying things I have not seen before. Everyone was friendly. We stop in the Leakey Mercantile for groceries every time we come to the Frio Canyon. Nothing fancy in the shelves, but good selection for a small town grocery. The meat counter is the real gem here: the freshest & best meats you could hope to find! Jake and Charlie will provide excellent cuts with friendly service and great big smiles.
