This sort of range is the reason that it's borderline impossible to get younger people into shooting, and the people who run it are the reason that we will completely lose our 2A rights within the next 5 decades.
I'm a very experienced shooter. Picked up a new rifle and optic a few months ago and went here with a friend to sight it in, as this is one of the very few places around that has 200y ranges. First impression was not good - $40 total to get in, cash only, but hey if you don't have cash, you can use the ATM that charges a $5 transaction fee!
You spend $20 on a range card that serves as a membership. At high-quality ranges, a membership gives you deeply discounted or unlimited shooting and is much more expensive. Here, a $20 membership grants you the ability to spend another $20 to shoot. Before you can actually sign up though, you need to watch a VHS-quality video about the range safety rules - and boy, what rules. No FMJ ammo, period. If you ask them why, they'll say it could ricochet - ricochet off what, the 25-foot soft dirt berms? Do they not know that soft-point and HP can ricochet as well? But hey, since you've already given up time and money to get here, you're hitting the sunk cost fallacy, so here sonny - we can sell you a box of 20 rounds for $30! Never mind that it would run you half that (if even) at Academy. You can't clean your firearm, but running a bore swab (i.e. cleaning) is ok; no taking it apart and rendering it non-functional though! No rapid fire, i.e. 1 second between shots, but I got shouted at for 3 seconds between shots, so I can only assume they think so slowly that they're not sure what one second is anymore.
The ROs are geriatric. Crusty doesn't even begin to describe them. My friend got shouted at by one because when they called the range cold, he cleared his gun, placed it down, and picked up his cup of coffee from the bench. Nope, can't touch anything on the bench when they decide the range is cold! Grabbing coffee that's sitting 3 feet away from your gun? Against the rules! One more infraction and you're out, kiddo!
I had one RO maul my rifle and nearly drop it on the ground because he didn't believe that the bolt didn't lock back. I told him several times that it's an AK pattern rifle, the bolt doesn't lock back, and he snapped at me about how "there's a notch in the safety" and kept messing with it. I had to wipe his hand grease off the receiver once the range went hot again. I want you to imagine just how revolting that is, not to mention the incredible rudeness of handling someone else's rifle without even asking permission.
Other highlights: -While walking down the cold range to swap targets, an RO shouted at me that I can't use the golf cart. I hadn't touched the golf cart and was already long past the firing line where it was sitting. I'm in my 20s, I don't need a golf cart to transport myself a few hundred yards. -My friend was shouted at for picking up his spent brass. The ROs tried to sweep it up from around his feet while he was shooting. -Another RO manhandled my Calico while trying to check that the chamber was clear. The bolt was locked back and the mag removed and he couldn't even figure out where the chamber was. At least I didn't have to wipe old man hand grease off my gun that time, but he flagged me with it (so much for "keep your gun pointed in a safe direction) -We got shouted at for trying to leave. We packed up our guns while the range was hot. Everything was clear and in cases. As we were turning to go, they called the range cold and then shouted at us for trying to carry cased guns away from the firing line during a cold range.
Never again. If I was a new shooter, I'd have been so turned off by these decrepit boomers that I'd have done a 180 and joined Moms Demand Action.
This range is a plague upon the state and a flawless example of everything wrong with the previous generation's gun culture. Avoid...
Read moreFirst off, this was Not my first or second choice for outdoor range. I wanted to shoot outside of Burnet, but they were closed due to a festival. When I was researching this place, at first I was excited to check it out. At the end of my visit, definitely not worth $25 a day. My next visit to the area, me and my cousin are most likely going halves on a year membership to pay hourly someplace else.
No rifle FMJs really?!?!? Luckily I shoot handload match rounds, cousin, not so lucky. First range I have ever been to that restricts this... usually steel core (because of provided steel targets down range) or tracers (because of dry environments) are the usual restrictions or large magnum caliber, 416, or 50 restrictions. fyi, even poly tipped, bthp, soft points, etc ricochet, ask me how I know, anyone that actually shoots knows. Even shooting competitions allow FMJs for rifle, I've used them for run-n-gun comps, just no steel core. Do they think FMJ = Steel core??? I dont know, I've read some funny reviews on Midway USA
$50 for first time??? and $25 after that??? Where's the perks? shoot all day? meh. I pay $60 once a year at my local range and no daily fee and I go at least 3 times a week(or someone can pay about $10 a day for non-pass holders), this place makes my range look like it's for the rich and famous. For the price gouge, you think they might hire some proper contractors to build proper berms if they are so worried about ricochets. Quick shoot, once or twice a month, sure ok... but save your money and get a proper membership at a better facility.
The facility is minimal compared to places I've been to. Only a back berm and no actual engineered side protection berms (layout usually seen on 500+ yard ranges not mere 300 yards) This is most likely a privately own range on a budget, no county or city assistance.
Their shooting bays replicate indoor pistol bays. I'm a slender but a fit guy and I still felt cramped with my rifle. Stools are low and the benches are high. one plus, they provide you some pretty good bags at each bay.
If you are ok with the "ROs" touching and inspecting your stuff during cease fire inspection without your permission, you'll be fine, well, I was not. My blood instantly boiled, because you wear a red shirt does not mean you can mess with my gear... even county official badged ROs at my range ask permission or request I correct something. I was standing right there, simply ask me and I will fix my mistake. I don't know you, don't touch my stuff.
Cousin and I left shortly after that, we were done with their procedures. If you are use to the rules and procedures I guess its ok of a place, it's only 300 yards, but what I'm use to, this place is run extremely low budget, at high cost.
Next time I drive 10 hours to shoot with my family, we are going to do it right and spend the extra money, if we are shooting custom rifles, we are going to a proper long range facility. $280yearly (Retire first responder/retired military family) at $7.50hr don't sound that bad now.
If you (the consumer) made it this far on my rant (which i usually don't rant, that's how much of an impact this place had on me), after looking through some of the other low stars, the owner or someone will most likely come on and bash back and call me an idiot or someone that's unsafe... so, just in case, Last comment: This is an honest review and calling someone an idiot is unprofessional and not how to run a business and attitude like that does not deserve...
Read moreFirst time I went to this range was last year. Pretty good experience, it was a Wednesday, slow day. Had a nephew with me. I am 54, prior military, prior LEO and grew up shooting on cattle ranch since I was 5. About 20 minutes later, the other people were done, and RO stated he would not stop every 20 minutes due to us being the only ones. Cool. Shot 5.56 w/FMJ's. No problem. He walked past us several times as we shot. Onto my second visit with my wife about 2.5 months ago. Assigned my pistol range lanes for spouse and I. Front desk gentleman stated when we were ready to go to rifle range, come in and let him know. We finished shooting pistols after about 45 minutes. Range was cold. RO stated of we wanted to go to rifle range, go inside, let front desk know, and we could gather firearms and wait behind red line, just like when you enter range when hot. Remember, he checked our firearms as he did with the others, range is cold. Came back, grabbed safe firearms, all unloaded and in cases, and walked down to assigned rifle lanes, BEHIND RED LINE, and laid cases down and was just about to take a seat. This RO decides to jump my shit in front of everyone, and berate me, and asked what I was doing by moving down to rifle land with firearms. I started to respond by repeating what he told me, in front of my spouse, about moving down to rifle lane after assignment and I was behind red line after he inspected our pistols, which again, were all in cases secure. He continued to yell and stated I was not allowed to move down firing range until range was hot. What? Range was COLD and I was doing what he originally requested. He than berated me stating rules and safety. Then after setting targets, range went hot. I started shooting (AR15) AND on my during my second mag, approached me and stated "I need to inspect you ammo". I cleared and gave him a round. Proceeded to stated no FMJ's at this range. What? I stated, being respectful, in ALL OF MY years of shooting at ranges, indoor, and outdoor, I have never seen no FMJ rule. I asked what am I supposed to shoot with AR 5.56? After going into lawyers and reasons why, due to dirt going down to limestone, and the possibility of fragments coming back at shooters, AND, possible fragments ricocheting due to homes being within a mile, that their "lawyers" stated it would not be allowed. WTF? I have NEVER in my life seen or had a 5.56. or any other round ricochet back on an outdoor range, ranch, desert, or anywhere and hit me, much less a house 1 mile away. I stated stated all my time in military, police, and shooting since 5 (now 54) this has never occurred in my presence nor anyone else I know. He then began to be real nice to me (probably realizing how much of an ass he was before) and started talking about safety, complaints for new neighborhoods since they have been built etc etc. Then stated I can continue to shoot if I purchased their HOLLOW POINTS. WTF does range time with HOLLOW POINTS? (Unless you are sighting in new hunting rounds etc). I stated no thanks, and we left. The condescending attitude and the outburst was very unprofessional, uncalled for and not only that, I did what he told me to do. Never going back, ever. Went to Austin gun club with a friend, and shared my experience with several people, and they ALL stated, been there once, will never go back. Find another range. Austin gun club was awesome, and, you can shoot FMJ's ALL DAY LONG....
