(1) Deer Meat Quality: I have been getting my deer meat processed here for over 20 years. In the past I haven’t really been too big on deer meat, so I gave away most of what I killed. But over the years I have come to really enjoy deer meat. I have a deep freezer and I try to take enough doe meet each year so that I can fill my deep freezer all the way up. I rank Whiddon’s deer meat processing quality a 6 out of 10. Nothing to write home about, but it is Ok. The smoked sausage is best thing they have, and it keeps getting a little dryer and a little worse each year. I would only use Whiddon’s deer processing if you kill deer around Leary, GA and you don’t want to drive 18 minutes East to Abbotts Food Center (on the left heading away from Leary: 3023 Leary Rd., Albany, GA 31721) or to Wayne’s Deer Processing (on the right heading away from Leary: 3507 Vanderbilt Dr, Albany, GA 31721). Abbott’s and Wayne’s are right across the Leary highway from each other. I have never had a deer processed at Abbott’s, but Wayne’s does an excellent job and they have an awesome selection of ways to process your meat; from plain old cubed meat to cheese & jalapeño infused salami.
(2) Deer Taxidermy: I have had some work done by Whiddon’s and I was not impressed with the outcome at all. Also, to add insult to injury, Whiddon’s told me over the phone that my total taxidermy job would be $100 to $120 dollars. Then, when the job was done they charged me $225. The most simplistic way to put it is that they blatantly lied to me. I do not recommend their taxidermy at all.
(3) 20 + years ago Whiddon’s was call Leary Processing, and when you dropped your deer off and went inside you were greeted by kind people that seemed to genuinely want to help you. Now… During deer season it looks like a teenage hangout with half the kids (girls) obliviously on their phones and the other half of kids (boys) staring you down like they want to fight. It’s an odd seen, to say the least. It appears as though the adults have let the millennials loose to run the day-to-day operation. Not probably the wisest of business decisions.
