Three bad experiences, not even sure why we went back. My family has three bad experiences with three of our children.
The oldest child broke his arm. The doctor reset and cast the arm. At a follow up visit, it was clear to the untrained eye the bone was not resetting properly and the one end of the bone was growing on top of the other end, not into it. My husband pointed this out and the doctor dismissed him. My husband decided to get a second opinion in Columbia where the doctor scheduled him for next day surgery because the bone wasn't healing right. He had to have his arm re-broken and re-set by that doctor.
The middle child ended up with pneumonia at five. His father had taken him in and I was never notified that he was in the hospital until a family member called and asked how he was (this isn't the hospital's fault, I'm just trying to set the scene). I had left him less than a year earlier. He was an abuser and when a woman leaves her abuser, they still use tactics to try and control them through others. The social work department was like his dream. They told me if I didn't give my other child to him (even though it wasn't his parenting time) that they would not allow me to visit my other child in the hospital. They used visiting and staying with my sick child as a tool to get me to whatever my ex husband had said. And then when he refused to go get the child and return him as he had agreed, he just got away with it. Then they tried to tell me they would enforce our custody order even after we left the hospital. Someone trained in social work (it is also my field of work), gets training in domestic abuse and they just let it all go out the window and took a willing part to continue. They then send my son home with an asthma maintenance medication that is meant to be the last resort after other options were exhausted. It has all sorts of side effects and even increases the risk of asthma related death. I took him back to his family doctor and I think he nearly fell out of his chair when he found out what they had put him on. He advised me NEVER to take him there again and he had even driven his wife to a further hospital after she was in a car accident because he had zero trust in the doctors at Mercy Lebanon. He then put my son on Singulair, the general go to choice for asthma management and my son has been on it 5 years, no pneumonia and has only had bronchitis bad enough to need steroids three times.
Five years after that incident, we had our foster child there. We had chose Mercy because it was a Saturday night and by a Google search, their urgent care was the only one open (just an FYI, Cox is also open until 8:00 pm on Saturdays and I would highly recommend them). He'd been running a high fever that wasn't responding to medication and was wheezing and pulling on his ears. My husband arrived and found the urgent care closed so had to go to the ER (which we all acknowledge as unnecessary and an inappropriate place for what was going on). They had no idea why urgent care was closed but proceeded to check out the child. Because he was under two, they did a rectal temp. There is no need for that. No other hospital in the area does that, not even on a newborn. It was highly invasive and not needed. They then did two swabs, one for rapid strep and on for a culture, sent him home a determined it was a viral respiratory infection. He was miserable all weekend, and after a very sleepless Monday night, Tuesday I took him to Cox Urgent care. He had a double ear infection (which Mercy swore his ears were fine but he had symptoms on Saturday) and they felt he needed a steroid for the wheezing, which had not gotten worse since the ER visit. On Tuesday night, the charge nurse called to tell us the strep culture was in fact positive and he needed medication. I have no clue why it took FOUR DAYS to call back to get a suffering child help. It was okay, though, Cox had already...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was in a hospital for an overdose. I was put into a room for 24 hours with no food, drinks, and few bathroom breaks. The staff outside made fun of the ill people there and myself. A woman came in with a meth overdose and they were laughing about it once she I guess passed out. I had male guards come into my room at random times and be rough with waking me up by pushing, shoving or grabbing me by my arms. I was fine just asleep. I was kept in the dark. I asked about getting my medications but was not allowed. I take meds for IBS in which I got a severe case of that makes me very deathly ill. I asked many times what of my meds and food. They had a few people say they'd find out but never did. When I was asked about my diet I told them it was a vegan diet all other stuff made me sick. After many tries for food, i was forgotten the day I was transferred out I was brought expired fruit and a meat sandwich. I don't eat meat they said to just eat the bread. I also had told them many times I can't eat without my IBS pill or I'd get sick. Nobody gave me an answer to why I was not allowed my meds or even my blood sugar took once. I was sick, dizzy and disoriented from hunger and my blood sugar low. I was allowed a shower only 30 mins till I was to leave which I had no idea about. I had overheard the staff both male and females saying ride thing about that I was crazy. A man that was not involved in getting me from my house knew what I was wearing and not. I was taken out in my PJ's. He was speaking of how disgusting I was for now wearing underwear and my appearance was not nice cuz I was dragged out of bed before a shower that day. How my private info got to this EMT from another town is unknown to me. I called the staff out for their horrible behavior which in return I got more rude remarks and mistreated verbally and neglected for my basic human needs. I lost 6lbs in 3 days due to being sick. The men were rough with me I think cuz I called them out on their vile acts. I was not rude I simply told them I can hear them out there and they should be ashamed of themselves. I trusted this hospital and I got shoved into a very small all-white room with no care, food, meds or proper care. I now am doing better but i can't go near men or be alone in small areas I get a tense feeling of that horrible place. I worry about the others that were also mistreated and made fun of. I will fight this for all people involved. people make mistakes but it is human nature, what this place did was inhumane. There were only 2 people that truly cared for others and my well being. A nurse and her brother who was a EMT that took me out of there. It was this nurse who arranged me to have food brought to me, a shower given but she didn't know what the food was like and the nurse who took me to the shower was rude and towards the end almost went to yank me out. She opened the curtain and forced it that way and made sure I was drying off while a MAN the same man that made the rude remark about me was standing there! I was exposed and shamed for how I looked. My mental state was not good going into there but coming out I never want to see a hospital again and they downright scare me. My personal info was talked of with strangers and it's sick and I'm not letting this slide. I want this...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy mom is in ISOLATION at this hospital for C diff which is HIGHLY contagious. There were two nurses taking care of her last night and BOTH were wiping her nether regions if you know what I mean. One of them left the room WITHOUT TAKING OFF HER ISOLATION GOWN AND GLOVES. She walked down the hall to the nurses desk and then back into my mother's room!! I'm a nurse. That's a BIG NO NO. Yes, it's a hassle to have to take off the gown, wash your hands and forearms, dry off, go do your business, come back and regown and reglove, but it may save a life. Also she's in a negative pressure room which means that the door should be closed AT ALL TIMES, but it was not closed unless I or my husband did it. The reason for negative pressure when someone is in isolation is because air gets into the room, but is supposed to be filtered back out of the room. But with the door standing wide open air is free to flow wherever it wants. C diff HAS BEEN DETECTED IN AIR TESTS/STUDIES, so don't believe anyone who says it isn't airborne. One nurse (the same one who left without changing gowns) picked up a phone they use and put it up against her own FACE WITH HER GLOVES ON .............GLOVES SHE HAD JUST USED WHILE TOUCHING MY MOTHERS BUTT!!!! YUCK!! There was no fecal matter that could be seen, but I don't care, the germs are still there. Mom's IV got kinked and NO ONE CAME for over 30 minutes (I timed it and my dad walked down to the nurses station once) We kept silencing the alarm AFTER someone came in and silenced it WITHOUT A GOWN OR GLOVES ON, and left the door wide open. OMG, talk about incompetent. My ex mother in law was there with several of the same complaints from her family, only she wasn't in isolation, but they said, "Good luck getting a nurse when you need one". I called to make a complaint but no one is in the office, which is ok since it's 12:30 so they're probably at lunch. IF I don't hear from them by 4:00 I'm calling the Health Department in Lebanon. My advice? Don't go to Mercy. IF you've read the news about the Mercy in Springfield you'll know what I mean. Find another hospital, another clinic, the fire station, ambulance...
