Absolutely unprofessional, unhelpful, and quite frankly the exact and terrible opposite of what customer service at a place like this should be. Things are looking to move past reviews, as this is a serious issue that needs resolved. For context: I bought a gaming PC from Best Buy about two months ago. I am fairly tech savvy and have my whole life wanted to build a PC. However I am not quite technologically literate enough to build one from scratch. It is because of this that my idea was to buy a prebuilt PC from Best Buy.
Let me just say… the facade is there. I genuinely thought this was a workplace of people that enjoyed where they worked, and who were happy to help other people with issues that they had more knowledge on. I was wrong. Maybe besides a couple of interactions, everyone I exchanged with was the exact opposite of the type of person who should be working in Customer Service. Not to mention the PC I bought being riddled with problems only a month in despite barely being used, only for gaming through “Steam”, and treated as heavenly as possible. As I said it means a lot to me. An experience now tainted by Best Buy. PC ISSUES: -sound problems -display glitch -dirty on purchase -crashes (not gaming related) -and the big issue for which I went in today. Basically, from what I understand based on what was explained to me by Best Buy: At some point within the past day or two when my PC had been powered off it installed a windows update that caused a Bitlocker encryption reset to pop up. This meant that I could not access the computer without finding the Bitlocker encryption, key, and entering it and having the computer restart and reinstall windows. Loosing my data in the process, not something I was warned would happen in any way. CUSTOMER SERVICE: The young gentleman who was helping me at first was extremely kind and professional. I will say that. He had answered several of my questions and had even begun on fixing my PC. Resetting it, as mentioned above. This will be important later. I had also brought back an “Oculus Quest Link Cable” which I had intended on trying to return. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to or not. The geek squad member offered to get a manager to see if he could help to return the cable, as it was past the very short 14 day return period. This is all happening as we wait for the PC to finishing resetting and installing Windows. Obviously my hopes were not high, but I appreciated his gesture nonetheless, so I waited it out for the manager to come. I’m not sure if I caught him on an off day or what, but when he first came out I could tell by his demeanor that he would’ve rather been elsewhere. Let me state again that I have no problem with the return period, other than the fact that I was not told about it when I made my purchases. I mean even Walmart warns you, and theirs is 30 days. Regardless, this guy explains this to me as if I’m a 4 year old, who can’t understand policies. I will admit, in my frustrations in dealing with all the issues with the PC and trying to deal with over the phone service as well as this, I said “this type of scammy, get out over on you, small print at the very bottom of the receipt policy is not what I would expect from a Best Buy.” This must have upset him as he responds “Fine. Here is your cable then.” Slams it on the table and begins to walk away. Damaging the box. In response I ask him what the f* his deal is. Not in a loud or rude way, genuine curiosity and concern. To which he responded by telling me that I won’t disrespect him by cussing…. and proceeding to “kick me out”. Honestly, whatever, there are other places that I can get my PC fixed, or just come back with a different manager. I was packing my stuff up and leaving. What really got me was when I tried calmly asking him why his reaction was so extreme and even APOLOGIZING for cussing once at him, he threatened to call the cops, and then unplugged my PC, while it was STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF A CRITICAL FUNCTION. Not at all okay, and could’ve severely damaged my...
Read moreHad a terrible experience at this store. It’s the closest Best Buy to me and so I did frequent it fairly often.
About a month ago while going through the open box section and speaking with my girlfriend while on the phone about purchasing a product Best Buy had in the open box section. I asked the manager if it was alright for me to check out the box of the product including going through the box to make sure all the contents that should be in the box were there, also that the serial number matched the box as tons of scams are happening all over on places like FB Market Place etc. I know this because I am an active member on Reddit for these 2 products specifically and see posts fairly often to verify the legitimacy for this particular item. The item I was looking at was about $500-$550 and is of a brand that I have put quite a bit of money into including other purchases at Best Buy.
The manager gave me the approval to open and look inside since the two products I was looking at were indeed open boxes and within their dedicated section. While inspecting the two products a security guard by the name of Matt? I believe it was. Bum rushed me accusing me of attempting to steal?
They also earlier acknowledged that another product I was already intending to purchase around the price of $150-200 had visibly been opened and torn up but was on the sales floor was a non open box. When I asked them about why it wouldn’t be an open box it is because “all of the contents of the package were in there?”
How a product that has everything and has been opened, isn’t an open box and then accusing someone of trying to steal for checking the boxes in the open box section WITH manager APPROVAL is truly beyond me as I fail to comprehend a legitimate reason for behaving like that. As I plead to the manager to tell the security guard he gave me his approval to open the boxes and look inside the security guard snatched the two products from me and started to package them up while the manager began to defend his security guard saying “He see’s both sides and people come in here all the time to steal?”.
As an African American Male I can’t but help feel that I was racially profiled. After an embarrassing exchange I was then practically escorted to the front to purchase my product as if to prove I wasn’t lying about buying the product and that I have the money to afford something is one of the most embarrassing and quite frankly racist and belittling of a situation I have ever been in. I will never return to this store again and I write this to warn any minorities that go in there what they may experience while shopping.
I did end up purchasing the two products I was accused of stealing totaling about $750 spent and I am happy with them. I will continue to buy the brands of the items I bought. I just will never purchase them from Best Buy again.
This happened about a month ago and it’s been weighing on my mind as if I should say something or not, as well as being on the Reddit communities for the two products that I purchased and other users describing being at Best Buy doing the same things I was doing it with the same products, same way as open boxes and none having an experience like mine is the reason for...
Read moreOn Aug 2nd, 2025, Missiouri's Sales Tax Holiday weekend, we took our grandson school clothes shopping in Lee Summitt, MO because we live in SE Kansas. One of the stops we wanted to make was Best Buy so we could buy a new all-in-one computer for home. When we got to the store the first guy asked if we were there for "no sales tax shopping"? We told him yes. He directed us to a table over by the phones, computers, etc - and that whole area was ROPED OFF. We had to stand and wait in line for one of two employees at the table to get done with other customers. When it was our turn the young lady started asking us all these questions. What's our name, address, phone number, email address, etc? I told her we didn't want to do any of that - they shouldn't need that info. I told her we simply wanted to look at some computers. And she said, "Well, by me filling out this form it can help us to help you decide what you want and need." (We knew what we wanted - there were two all-in-one computers we wanted to look at.) I kept telling her we did not want to do any of that...can't we just be let into the area to look? They finally let us through. We found the two all-in-one computers we wanted to look at. We decided either one would work for us - so we just needed to find out if they had them in stock and available? I turned around and there were 2 guys at 2 registers behind us. One was looking at me, so I asked, "Can you please help us?" He literally said, "NO! You want help you need to go back over to the table and go through the process!" I looked at my husband then at him and I said, "No, we're not going to do that." My husband was as equally taken aback and as upset as I was. (They weren't busy so why was this going on?) I said to my husband, "Ok, let's go. I'm not doing this!" My husband looked at him and asked to speak to a manager. This man told my husband he WAS the "manager" and he escorted us to the roped exit area to let us out. Did I look at his name badge? NOPE - because I was done! It had reached the point of no return in about 60 seconds.
My husband and I are not the type of customers who expect something for nothing and are difficult to deal with. You treat us with respect and we will be very grateful for your help. They did NOT need personal information before a purchase!?
Aug 2nd was a Saturday, and of course the Tax Free Holiday was all weekend. My husband got up on Sunday, drove to the Joplin, MO Best Buy and PURCHASED one of the computers we were looking at. No roped off areas, no rude employees! That "manager" at Lee Summit made their store lose out on a $1,000 sale!!!
Now we know to keep going to Joplin where they appreciate their...
