FINAL UPDATE: Eskew’s went far out of their way to replace the old chipped opal with a new one of very similar color and beauty. They even sent it away to be cut and polished to the exact specifications of the original stone. Deanne apologized for what had happened with the ring, even though there was no absolute proof they were to blame for the original damage. I’m quite sure none of the big-name chain jewelers would have gone to these lengths to make things right for an occasional customer. But Eskew’s can rest assured that this occasional customer is now a loyal customer who will be back to give this family-owned jewelers my business every time. Thank you, Eskew’s.

UPDATE: Deanne at Eskew’s phoned me immediately after seeing my review and offered to polish or even replace the stone on my wife’s ring. We took the ring in and thanked them. I will update this again when Eskew’s has finished with the ring.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: My elderly mother recently gave my wife an opal ring that has been in the family for generations. Yesterday at about 3 p.m., we took it in to Eskew’s to have it cleaned. Big mistake! The woman who “helped” us handled the ring carelessly and dropped on the hard tile floor. We couldn’t believe our eyes and we cringed as we heard the stone hit the hard tile. The clerk herself was unfazed as she picked it up — and made not the slightest attempt at an apology as she looked at it through a loupe. “Did you know there are chips on the opal?” she asked. No, we didn’t. On the contrary, as far as we knew or could see, the ring had survived nearly 100 years intact before arriving at Eskew’s Fine Jewelers, where after 15 seconds and a four-foot drop to the floor, it had two clear chips on the right side of the stone, as we were now quite matter-of-factly being shown. My wife and I were so dumbstruck at this employee’s unapologetic nonchalance and carelessness, that I could only manage a feeble “Could those chips not be related to the ring being dropped on the floor?”. No, no, the clerk said, adding an explanation laced with what I assume was jeweler jargon that we could hardly rebut. In a state of shock, we paid the $24 they charged for putting batteries in two watches — and we left, absolutely sick. Of course, there’s no way to prove the chips weren’t already there, as I didn’t take a closeup photo of the ring before entrusting it to the hands of an Eskew’s employee, who incidentally could have avoided dropping it on the floor if she had only tended to us from inside the counter, not out on the customers’ side. In any case, neither I nor anyone I know has ever seen a jeweler drop a ring on the floor. It’s just as well this person (“LF” according to the watch battery receipt) works in a jewelry store and not a hospital delivery room! Have been customers since 2009 and will continue coming here. The owner who recently pasted took such great care of us even years after buying our last item from them. We really liked Jim a lot. My wife and I were going to our first gala with friends and he let her borrow over $50,000 worth of jewelry and did not charge us a thing. We were just there looking and told him what we had planned. He went to the back, grabbed a $45,000 dollar necklace and told her to wear it if she wanted. We though it was a joke. Who how beautiful my wife looked and the jewelry made her feel good.

Recently, I had a chance to meet Jim's brother Kurt, regarding my wife's wedding band that belonged to my grandmother who is deceased. Originally we had grandma's engagement band melted and fit to our engagement band leaving grandma's wedding band unused. So, Jim said the he could melt it, and make a custom third band.

This is when we met Kurt. Kurt had a great idea to use the remaining diamond to make a single earring for my wife's single upper ear piercing. The finished product was a rose gold beautiful one of a kind earring that my wife received on Valentine's day and absolutely loved how each turned out. Definitely disappointed with my experience here. Me and my fiancé went in the first time and met a lady that while not over the top amazing was helpful and pleasant. The second time we went in we were helped by another lady who had a horrible attitude. She didn't smile one and her attitude was as if she was angry that she had to help us. Every time we asked to look at a ring she would sigh as if we were asking her to move mountains. Also the jewelry store has horrible return policies. almost every ring we looked at the lady said that we could not return it for any reason.
