I have spent numerous times overnight with my Mom, but never have we had such a terrible experience as this one. The NP, Sarah and initial ER RN were terrific. However, the rest of the experience was not.
Two employees came in for blood cultures that no one had talked to us about. They were bickering at each other. It made my Mom uncomfortable. Then, we were told a Hospitalist will see her before we will go upstairs and that did not happen.
Next, a medication error upstairs after we are in the room. We ask for her Parkinson's medication. "You aren't on Parkinson's medicine," says the RN. Huh??? So, supposedly that was an error made by the ER Dept, and the RN was able to get it fixed.
Next, the Hospitalist, DO Mundenke, comes in for rounds the next morning, June 17. He states they want her to stay another day. We asked him several questions, and he actually stated, "At some point, you are going to have to trust me because I am the Doctor." Huh? We aren't allowed to ask questions about the plan or the diagnosis. Really?
After he left, the RN came to administer meds. There were 3 meds missing. They are ALL prescribed by St Luke's doctors. The RN will have to ask the DO Mundenke. He returns. He then tells us that he doesn't normally tell patients about medication changes "because their eyes glaze over, but he can see that the two of us are different." Huh? You were just in here 15ish minutes ago & didn't communicate this change? He now says that he wants to hold three of the medications to see if her kidney labs improve. Okay, got it.
On 6/17, my Mom had an "event" when taking her breathing treatment for pneumonia. She needed her Parkinsons medicine as her tremors were a 10 out of a 10. And the RN had assured us that there was a 4th dose of it that could be given in the evening as a PRN, if needed. NOPE ...she waited for over an HOUR TO GET HER PARKINSONS med because now they have to get "approval" even though the RN from the 6/16 shift said it was in the system, approved, & would be no problem.
On 6/18, the DO says "the ECG was abnormal, so we want to keep you here for a cardiology consult." No other significant information was given. Now, the 3 pills he said he was holding are now administered. You guessed it, NO COMMUNICATION WHATSOEVER, regarding a med change or the kidney lab results. Then, later the same day 6/18, he returns. We asked about the medication & he states that they were much improved, so that is why he added the three meds back in. But here's the situation. The Kidney Labs WERE NOT MUCH IMPROVED & were insignificantly varied." Bun was 44 from 39. Creatine was 1.23 from 1.4. And Gfr was 38.1 from 44.5. When we asked about the blood culture results, he stated that they were not back & he would be surprised if they showed anything.
Then he states, "You are going home today, bc the first ECG was skewed by tremors." The not-so-funny part is that my Mom has Parkinsons & yes, she has tremors, but none of the last 15 ECGs were abnormal. Not one of them, but just the one today was affected by her tremors. Hmm
I can no longer recommend St Lukes East. This really shook me to the core. Too many mistakes. I did not even list them all. This hospital used to be run more effectively, efficiently, & rarely made a mistake from our experience. I don't know what has happened.
Next, the Hospital response will be to contact Patient Advocate. If you care & want to improve, why donāt you make the call? ...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went in for Urine Retention. Had a seizure and pissed myself and woke up on the floor. I'm still covered in piss. Tried to reach out to an advocate but no response. Asked for a supervisor and was met with someone who claimed to be in charge while saying "Idk" a bunch and didn't want my mom on the phone with me because she didn't want to be recorded. She tried several times to politely stash away my phone and make sure my mom wasn't listening. She even tried handing the phone to the ER nurses but I got my phone out of one of their hands and very confused faces. I was not recording anyone and my mom was there on the phone because I didnt feel safe after waking up in my own piss and begging for help for 3 to 5 mins to the sound of silence. My mom was listening on the phone and after they cleaned up the pee from the seizure they failed to check for a seizure. If I hadn't had a seizure this staff would've killed me. They lied to me and said I wasn't retaining any urine when my full bladder from a seizure proved differently. They pretend to care but it's protocol. Still waiting on an advocate. This is not okay. I might have bladder cancer and nothing was checked. I was just forced into a bed until I had a seizure and pissed myself. That's all that happened. Hardly spoke to a nurse and the doctor was there for about 2 minutes listening to me beg for a catheter. I was discharged right after the seizure. My own mother tried to ask her questions over the phone and even informed them of my seizure. Nothing. Just got shuffled out and treated like less than a human. I had a seizure and that solved their problem so they gave me one pill for bladder pain and didnt even tell me what it was. Discharged directly after that. And still no call back from an advocate. Do you know what it feels like to wake up in your own piss with no clue as to even what the date is at the time? And then get discharged and forced to drive home? Come to saint lukes very caring and considerate location and dont be a fuss or you'll get left in pain and told to quiet down. Medical Malpractice is the 3rd leading cause of death in America. Update: You can't even report it and still no call back. Is this some sick idea of a joke? Edit: Turns out I have a severe spinal injury. I went to Advent health in Overland Park Kansas afterwards and recieved quality care, a urologist, social worker, and neuro specialist. Im getting surgery and still have retention issues. Thank God Im not at St. Luke's anymore. Dont go here for emergencies.
Final Update: The Hospital investigated themselves and determined they did nothing wrong. I still stand by what I said. I dealt with hospitals in the area treating me like this for over 10 years and I'm just now getting the courage to even speak up about it. Remember, if they did it to me, there is a chance they will do it to you. They will treat your grandparents and children this way. Always be present to prevent this. I had the surgery and if this issue would've been caught sooner with an MRI and a doctor who actually cares. Still want to give Negative Stars to this place for all the pain it caused me and continues to cause me. I am handicapped for life with an incomplete spine. I owe this place for their hand in all that and everything they did to cover themselves up. Protect yourself and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOn the evening of September 25 my husband was transported to this location by Ambulance due to Severe Abdominal Pain he obviously was in Serious Condition because he came from a Nursing Facility!! My husband is a stroke victim is nearly blind and unable to take care of himself alone He recently had surgery and also has multiple issues!! Due to our support system being limited I was unable to get to him immediately!! The checked him in and put him in The waiting room unattended!!! He was unable to use the restroom alone and totally unable to move around due to his blindness and pain etc... I called the hospital and spoke with a Sincerely rude male operator he had no compassion at all neither did the Emergency Room staff cause they were at capacity they kept saying he could not be in the Emergency room at All and that they would have the triage nurses looking after him!! Well needless to say this did not occur for about 3-4 hours my husband was also on oxygen and was diagnosed from the nursing facility with pneumonia!! As he sat and sat I was on the phone trying to get someone to at least go out and tell my husband to call me I was told by 3 different people they would get word to him.. needless to say that never happened as well... By this time I'm in tears and finally got a compassionate operator to get the House Supervisor...she calls I explain the situation... She at least has someone come out momentarily to help him use the bathroom.. I was begging if they could not see him or keep him at least in the actual Emergency room could they trans fer him back to the Nursing Facility or to another location the ER Charge Nurse told me no that would actually be taking Money from their hospital I promise you... So I said oh so it's about the Money huh ?? She quickly recanted... When I was finally able to get out to the hospital I had three to four witnesses telling me how badly he was being treated!!! Thank God for good people still !! These were patients waiting in the ER as well!!! This facility is unprofessional ,impatient ,non compassionate, from the operator of the Facility to the staff in ER ... The House Supervisor was a decent lady but she couldnt help him become more supervised it was a very traumatic and heartbreaking situation... I can't understand how a healthcare facility will accept someone elderly or severely disabled and/or sick to be sitting unattended for hours toppling over in their wheelchair which is how I found my husband!!!! I will be speaking with administration I've already left messages for the advocate, please if you need immediate help pass this location up!!!!! The situation could have been handled more compassionately without possibly interfering with other patients in line to be seen!!!! The people I encountered were Robotic and Unprofessional!!!!! I believe this Hospital has to know it has issues in the ER system they either don't care to improve or can't!! I'm so happy I got my husband out of there ALIVE!!!!! Please you are a HOSPITAL please do better for the Community it is so Urgently Needed but as for myself and Mine hopefully it's a done Deal it was just too...
