Not a very friendly staff and the swim teachers don't seem very well trained. On more than one occasion I've witnessed the teachers talking to each other with their eyes off of the children in their class. Once, my three-year-old lost his footing and was under water and neither the teacher nor the lifeguard she was speaking to noticed and he was only a foot or two away from the teacher. I had to yell at them to help him. I also saw the same teacher walk away from a group of preschoolers as they sat on the edge by themselves. Then other teachers are just not very friendly and don't seem to try very hard to get the kids engaged. Another one is very gruff and mean with the young kids. They just do not understand children very well at all (with the exception of two nice girls we have had, but I don't think they're there anymore).
Unorganized system for lessons. Then when you need confirmation on a class half the staff doesn't know how to look up the information. So often parents show up with their kids for a class and their child's name is not on the list. That wastes class time while they figure out the glitches. Inconsistent teachers and lots of subbing, which limit skill growth for the kids.
Most of the childcare staff has been friendly and good with the children, but when something does happen (like when a child bites) and you ask about a policy, they don't...

Dropping my daughter off to Liberty YMCA as she want to practice her stroke in the pool (she has been with the swimming team for many years there). Asking for the wristbands at front as she is only 13, and one staff member asked me if I am staying and I said no but I need to go in and check to make sure she will have a lane open in the pool then I am getting back to my work, otherwise I need to drive her home and pick another day.
Daughter gets her wrist band but when I am heading to the pool the YMCA staff member signaled that I need to leave immediately, and I said again I just need to walk my daughter in and make sure everything is fine then leave, ironically she start to ask if I have a membership for this YMCA. I felt so absurdly, why I have to show my membership if I already explained multiple times and will be in and out in less than 2 minutes.
I don’t know if this is the typical practice for every YMCA, which I doubt and hope that is not the case. But I felt really disappointed that YMCA will allow such way for treating their members...
Read moreNice place, hard lines on rules though. I have 3 children and a newborn. Took the kids to swim, there is a pool area separated by a glass wall and a seating area free of fumes. I was sitting in the seating area fume free with my newborn watching my kids in the pool about 20 feet away. The lifeguard called the manager and made me move into the pool area with my newborn. So I moved maybe 3 feet from my original position and am now inside the pool area and my newborn gets to inhale the fumes from the chemical byproducts. Studies show those fumes affect lung development and leads to asthma. Thanks for being sticklers on your rules, I'm literally able to touch the seat I was in if the glass wall wasn't there. Brought it up to the front desk person when I was leaving that this seemed unnecessarily stringent (especially since I responded to my kids behavior while the lifeguard didn't). The guy at the desk told me not to bring the baby next time I wanted to take the kids swimming... really?! I was under the impression the YMCA was FAMILY FRIENDLY. I must be wrong....
