I went to the Zigbone Farm Retreat for their 2025 Winter-on-the-Farm Writers Retreat and it was fabulous! Dena and Marijke, co-owners of Zigbone have created a magical environment and Diana Friedman, did an amazing job of leading the writing program during the 6 days I was there. The Farm Retreat is located in the midst of rolling farmland near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border and there are beautiful views from just about everywhere including the windows of the bedroom I stayed in. The first thing you see when you walk up to the main lodge is the expansive front porch filled with an array of comfortable chairs for hanging out on. That sets the tone for all that follows. Inside the lodge, the common rooms, including the living room, dining room, and kitchen, are beautiful and decorated to exude warmth, comfort, and cosiness. The bedroom I stayed in was more of the same with an extremely comfortable bed, convenient nightstand, an adorable writing desk, a wardrobe, and a big easy chair where I got lots of writing done. I especially appreciated that my room had it's own split unit so I had total control over the internal temperature of the bedroom. The split unit worked perfectly and was far superior to my hotel air units; I was always comfortable in my room, never too cold or too hot. My room shared bathroom facilities with the bedroom next door but it was never a problem because the shower facilities were in a separate room from the sink and commode. The shower water was plentiful and hot. Because it was winter, I spent most of my time inside, but I did stroll around the grounds once and they are beautiful. The food served during the retreat was wonderful. Every meal was tasty and healthy. I particularly loved the homemade bread that was served daily, the fabulous soups that accompanied most lunches, and the granola, fresh cut up fruit, and yogurt available at every breakfast. Now - turning to the writing part of the writing retreat - I can only say that Dena's and Marijke's decision to invite Diana Friedman to lead writing retreats at Zigbone was inspired. From the very first night of our retreat, Diana created a warm, welcoming, non-judgmental and non-competitive atmosphere that fostered community among the participants and was also extremely conducive to maximizing creativity and productivity. The optional craft discussions, generative writing prompts and exercises that Diana presented were enlightening, useful, and fun. In addition, during my one on one discussion with Diana about my current novel, she suggested strategies that helped me move forward with my manuscript when, previously, I had been feeling completely stuck. I left the retreat feeling reinvigorated and excited about my writing and about the friendships I made during the retreat I cannot recommend Zigbone Farm Retreat, the Winter-on-the-Farm writing retreat, and Diana Friedman...
Read moreZigbone Farm was the spiritual heart of our wedding. As soon as we booked this venue, everything flowed from there. Schedule, design and theme, decisions about other vendors and guest list — everything else became easier because this venue provided such a gorgeously strong anchor point in the middle of our special celebration. What more can you ask for? Every single vendor commented on the uncommon beauty and peace of this venue. We loved having our welcome dinner here on Friday night and having a local vendor make pizza in the cob oven. On Saturday when it rained, we didn't have to worry because we knew the lodge house would beautifully accommodate our guests for cocktail hour and that the pavilion and event hall would be fine if the rain didn't stop (it did, and we got a double rainbow!). On Sunday, we hosted a beautiful farewell breakfast. It was so wonderful to be able to have so many friends stay on site with us, and to have some space from them in the bridal suite. Not having to leave the property once during the entire weekend was such a blessing and kept things from feeling too busy or crazy. Marijke was our main contact and she was so quick to respond to any questions we had and really fun to interact with. She clearly loves this place and has a deep enthusiasm for the couples who celebrate there. Our guests who stayed on site felt so spoiled and kept remarking on how relaxed they felt, that it felt like a true retreat for them even amid a busy schedule of events. We really hope to return to Zigbone for a reunion one day, what a special sacred place. I cannot recommend it enough to any couple marrying. Especially as a queer couple, we felt deeply affirmed, safe and celebrated here. Thank you...
Read moreIf you are searching for a magical place to celebrate your wedding, look no further than Zigbone. My son and daughter-in-law were married there recently, and it was perfect from start to finish.
From the very beginning, Marijke was instrumental in creating a seamless and unforgettable experience for the couple and our families. She guided us through everything - from recommending fantastic local vendors (special shout-out to Brothers Pizza for the rehearsal dinner, Mr. Garcia knows his stuff), to patiently answering all our questions and providing thoughtful advice on staging the reception. Her reassurance was much appreciated, especially since this was the first wedding for both sets of parents!
We booked the venue from Friday to Sunday, and having the entire wedding party stay onsite made the whole weekend feel cozy and relaxed. We had full use of the kitchen for the rehearsal dinner, which made everything convenient and stress-free. The reception space is stunning - chandeliers hanging from the rafters give it a rustic elegance that requires minimal decorating. There is a European countryside charm that the couple immediately fell in love with. Throughout the venue, you’ll find Marijke’s artwork, which adds a personal and artistic touch to the space. She’s an incredibly talented artist, and her work gives the venue unique warmth and personality. The venue truly speaks for itself.
Zigbone was more than just a venue; it was a home for a weekend full of love, joy and unforgettable memories. Much thanks to Marijke and Dena! Highly, highly...
