I can see why this place has such mixed reviews. There is a specific group of people that would enjoy this and if you are not in tat group, it is not worth it. If you are a super horror movie fan, really like Dean and Starr Jones, or are easily scared, this place it for you. If you are not one of those things, then don't bother or get some super discounted tickets.
The only haunted houses I have been to are ones put on by college students of which half I participated in. Because of this, I am not easily scared by haunted houses as I know exactly what goes into them and how they operate. This house is more like a walk-through of the sets from various movies the brothers have worked on with a few jump scares thrown in for good measure. I have not seen many of the movies as I AM scared by good horror films so the whole thing was a bit dull.
The line for the house takes 2 hours to get through if you get there early and probably 4 hours if you get there an hour after they open. Since the entire crowd is in the line, the characters that wander the small front area often come over to the line and attempt to scare people who are not paying attention. Most of the interaction with them is photo opportunities or high fives from groups of teenagers. I do not know the name of the character, but the guy with black armor and pale white skin is the most enthusiastic of the whole crew. He interacts with the line the most and seems to be the most pleased for a photo opportunity. The next best character is the priestly fellow with a lantern and then Mr. Twisty. Both of them are happy to interact with others but do not appear as much as the first guy. It should also be noted that they seem to split their time between entertaining the line and creating scares within the haunted house itself. The worst cast characters are the Sanderson Sisters. They made an appearance a total of 2 times during the night between 8 and 11. I also did not see them in the House or recognize a place for them to have been if they had been there. They, and the nuns who are the tour guides leading you through the house, also seem to be completely bored with their roles. I understand that as characters at a horror show they should probably not be particularly cheerful or welcoming but they instead come off as more dead inside. All performers that are not the above mentioned best 3, a pair of army zombies, or the little girls within the house, all have this problem of having the air of someone working their 9-5 job that they wish they could quite. Even the stage performers.
For the stage, it is a very small space next to the front of the line and is the place where all shows mentioned on the website happen. My favorite was probably the zombies doing a variation of Thriller at 8:15. I do not recall seeing that act again unfortunately as it was interesting. The moves are not the same as the original music video but they seemed to be trying. The host for the magic was too quiet to actually be heard from more than 10 feet away and most acts could not bee seen well from the line. This would be fine if there was ever more than 10 people milling about that were not in line but I would say a good 95% of attendees were in line most of the night. A dance troupe of did something akin to ballet in colorful dresses and pretty masks with the most bored/dead expressions on their faces I have ever seen. They were the largest group of non-zombie performers and had expressions to match the fully masked counterparts.
There was a hearse decorating competition that I didn't even notice until the award ceremony started. The "museum" was the size of of a two car garage and had no labels. As someone who does not stalk the IMDB or Wikipedia page of the Jones brothers, I had no idea what anything was other than being old, cracking masks.
TL:DR - Unless you are easily scared or a huge fan of Dean and Starr Jones, don't bother spending $25. Go to another horror show in the area or stay home and watch a...
Read moreThis is not my first haunted house, I've been going to several for many years. I go to ones that have proven to be good time and time again. I do like to try new haunts and this was one of them. I'm not going to say I'm an expert but growing up with horror movies, being involved in haunts myself, and really anything horror. I've been to some haunts that I thought were going to be good and turned out bad, it happens. I know some actors are sick and can't make it but they had a minimal amount of people working inside the haunt. I didn't count them but I would say less then 10. When there is not at least one jump scare it's a failure for me. I don't scare easy at all and I enjoy taking it all in. The crew that comes with me on the other hand, it's fun to watch them jump and scream. This is not one of those haunts if you are looking to feel anytime of fear. Definitely a great haunt for a childs first haunted house. This was my first haunt where it was guided the entire way through at a snails pace. I understand why they have a guide due to ups and downs along the way. I've been to haunts that have ups and downs and spinning floors that are not guided. To be honest I was watching a film they had on a TV outside the tent before we walked in and it looked promising. The makeup on the actors looked good. Pirates looked like something you would see from a movie and of course Jason, you can't go wrong there. We enter the tent and they go over the rules from a voice on another TV while watching a black screen. In my opinion they could have at least had an actor on the TV or live in front of you. We leave there and begin our tour through the "INSIDE HAUNT," which is not. There are moment you are inside but the majority is outside and walking through areas with built walls and no roof. I don't consider that to be inside. Two main things that stuck out to me only because that's where some actors were was the pirate area. Two pirates are sword fighting, looked worse than a dubbed Kung Fu movie. Attack high attack low and repeat. Their faces looked nothing like the film you see before you walk in. They looked normal with white paint on their face. The pirate ship itself looked good. I mean the construction work that went into that was well worth it it looked amazing. We walked into the pirate ship and made a circle and right back out. Not sure the reason behind that but there were six of us in the group and the first person made it around and looked into the ship at me I was fourth. Remember we are guided and at a snails pace, walking in there and out seemed pointless. We got to what seemed like leatherface but I couldn't make him out because he moved faster than all of us. Let me explain, he goes to start the chainsaw to scare us and it cuts off. We continue walking and he's behind the wall trying to start it again and again it dies. So some people laugh and we keep walking. He gets a upset I'm assuming because he was laughed at. He runs out and runs into the guy laughing and pushes him with his shoulder and runs back. Kind of reminded me of the kid that took his ball and went home. He definitely had an attitude because he couldn't get his chainsaw up and running. Next time check the gas. Some of the areas looked good but there were no actors to provide a jump scare or anything like that. This was my first and last time going here. On the walk in the guy said welcome to hell, I...
Read moreWas pretty disappointed in the performance after going to the woods of terror in Greensboro. I was told that it’s better when it’s busy and we went after Halloween. If you are open then you need to be up to par it wasn’t many actors and you would see the same actors double up. We went through the zombie area with only 1 zombie. I understand that they say it’s a slow night but you charged the same ticket price, if you can’t meet the standard go ahead and close or offer a discount. I know the owners are gonna reply to this like they do every negative comment with excuses like. “We been in business for 29 years and it speaks for itself” or “this is not what happened” or “this is fabricated” so on and so forth. I think it could be solid but super short and not enough actors. No clowns. The make up was great and the staff was friendly. Take my advice and hit the Woods of Terror same price tons of actors that hang out for photos before the walk. I’m sure there was a time the Hollywood horror show was the best around, that time has passed. (See, Told you they would respond, “ this is bias or not valid.” Have better things to do then make up things. What part is not fact? Do you charge the same price $25 on a bad slow night. Yes, did you have more than 1 zombie? No. Was there any clowns? No. And did you respond with a this is fabricated comment? Yes. Tell me what part is untrue. Very predictable you are.)
My response:
Are you serious? Are you really trolling a negative review? I’m a 45 year old manager and a retired Navy veteran. I’m sure it’s a good job for kids to make extra money not for me. I have not nor will ever work for Star or Dean Jones. Clearly immature leadership. This is ridiculous. I hope the people reading the reviews are watching. You guys didn’t put on a good show Thursday night. Accept it and stop making childish excuses. Idiotic for grown men who suppose to be community leaders. Amazing. I’m sure other than paying respect to a paying customer they will stoop to yet another trolling comment calling me a liar. And again, they can not state anything I said to be untrue as...
