My family had a terrible experience with Lazy Lane Cabins over Labor Day weekend, and I feel obligated to share so others don’t go through the same thing.
We booked the Oak Hollow cabin and drove several hours with our children, only to find that the steep gravel driveway was impassable for our vehicle. After multiple attempts, we began sliding backwards down the hill — it was unsafe and terrifying to my kids in the car.
Nowhere on the website or in the reservation details did it say that four-wheel drive was required to reach the cabin. And while the company later tried to argue that “it’s Hocking Hills” so guests should expect steep roads, that is not a reasonable excuse. Many rentals in the area are fully accessible by standard vehicles. A business renting cabins in the hills should clearly disclose when a property can’t be safely accessed without 4-wheel drive.
When we called their after-hours number that night, the only suggestion was to park at the bottom of the drive and hike our luggage, groceries, and small children up a steep, unlit gravel path — completely unrealistic and unsafe. We had no choice but to turn around and drive home, ruining our long-anticipated weekend and wasting hundreds of dollars in groceries and gas. We contacted Lazy Lane immediately and followed all of their instructions, but they were unresponsive for days. By the time they finally replied, they said they couldn’t refund us because they had already paid the cabin owner — even though we notified them the night of the issue. That’s not the customer’s fault; it’s a failure of their business process.
They later offered two free nights as a “good faith” gesture, but only if used before the end of the year. That offer was useless to us since our kids are back in school and our vacation time is gone. We filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, but Lazy Lane still refused to issue a refund and continued to insist that the problem was ours.
Lazy Lane Cabins completely failed to take responsibility for their lack of disclosure and their poor handling of this situation. Their customer service was dismissive and slow, and their “solution” was impractical.
If you’re considering booking with them, be warned: the cabins may not be accessible without four-wheel drive, the listings do not make that clear, and if you encounter any problems, you’re unlikely to get any help or refund.
EDIT: As you can see from Lazy Lane’s response, they clearly don’t take customer experiences seriously. The only person you can ever reach is the after-hours contact, who even admitted they can’t actually help with issues. Reaching the main office is nearly impossible — no one answers the phone, and messages just direct you to email. They hide behind emails instead of speaking directly with their customers or taking real...
Read moreWrens nest. Pick another place . We chose a quiet get away for the weekend as we had never been to the HH area and prefer cabins to hotels or campsites. We chose this cabin based on the information provided and past reviews . Directions to the cabin were provided at a self check in and should have been very clear as the cabin is indeed in a rural area . Unfortunately they were slightly lacking due to referring to arrows and numbers that weren't easily visible .upon arrival at the cabin The cabin itself was quaint and very simple in a rural area that was quiet and nestled in the mountains . We were quite displeased with several things. As with most cabin rentals this one has a robust cleaning fee attached to the regular booking fee which one would think would ensure a spotless clean venue in which to stay. Unfortunately that was not the case . The shower had black mildew up both sides as well as the shower head which also had black mold on the water holes . The shower head sprayed in almost every direction except that which you desired. There were only 4 towels and wash clothes for three day two night stay and no onnsite dryer washer forcing you to use dampntowels when using the hot tub and showering at least once daily.(if you do any amount of hiking most folks would want to shower a couple times daily ).Cobb webbs were seen between the lights on the ceiling fan and in a few of the windows. The window seal were full of dead bugs and dirty. The bed was nicely size but hard lumpy and uncomfortable and the cabin had only two thin pillows on it with no extras available (similar to those available at Walmart for 9 dollars). The booking site said tv and internet would be available but we found the satellite TV nit working despite following the reset directions provided and there was no internet available. The services book which nearly all air bnb vrbo and hotels have was several pages OF DON'T DO THIS OR WE WILL CHARGE YOU EXTRA with just a few pages of local...
Read moreWe stayed at Sunrise Forest at the end of Sept 2021. I'll preface this review with stating the we did not contact Lazy Lane with any of our issues as we didn't think there was anything they could correct.
Pros: cabin was clean and in good shape, photos on their website are accurate. HV/AC was working well, all the appliances worked (we used the stovetop, oven, toaster, washer, dryer, dishwasher). They had dish soap, tiny bars of hand soap, dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent pods, and dryer sheets available. We didn't use the hot tub.
Cons: as others have said, the driveway is STEEP, going up and down. We drove an SUV and it struggled. You do NOT want to drive a low car, it won't make it without scraping the bottom- just something to keep in mind. The WiFi is almost non existent. You can barely load a web page, let alone stream any video. Definitely plan on bringing your own movies/TV shows to watch- and your own player (the DVD player works but it's a frustratingly complicated system with the Dish remote to change inputs). There's Dish satellite TV available (no kids channels though!).
The biggest drawback of all was that we didn't know where the cabin was beforehand (they don't release addresses due to privacy issues) so it was hard to plan our activities and the lack of internet made it even more difficult. The cabin is at least 20 minutes from basically all the major "landmarks" in Hocking Hills- the caves, Logan, Lake Hope, etc. When you book literally any rental nowadays, you get the address. We wouldn't have booked the cabin if we'd known where it was beforehand. This was our first trip to HH and so we had no idea what to do or expect. All contact with Lazy Lane before our trip was quick and responsive, but we didn't get in touch with them during our stay since they can't fix the driveway, the cabin's location, or the cabin's WiFi. It is what it is, just wanted to leave this here so others are...
