I've been at this location with IRL friends last year and I totally forgot to write a review about this place. Here are my overall thoughts.
Pros:
TONS of inventory. If you are looking for common small parts for a project, this place probably has them already. Switches, drives, buttons, you name it. It's all here.
Friendly staff. I was looking for a power supply for a IBM computer that I happen to own. Unfortunately they didn't have my specific one, but they lead me to a collection of Power supplies for other computers. Will definitely consider if I end up getting more old computers.
Cons:
On the topic of old computers, there are a surprising amount of vintage computers on the racks. As much as I would LOVE to take one home, they are unfortunately not for sale and, like most of the bigger electronics, are only available for rent. I understand that these computers do have some history behind them, but I'm not exactly sure what's keeping the owners from selling them outright. Maybe it's something that I'm not aware of that the owner can explain, because I would LOVE an explanation.
Overall, if you are here for small trinkets for your next project, this is a good place to go. Don't get to excited when you see an old Macintosh though. They most likely won't sell it to you for yours to keep.
EDIT: Thanks a ton to the owner for explaining the rental part of the business. It honestly didn't occur to me how close this was to Hollywood, and if it means old electronics are being preserved and are still given a purpose, I'm here for it! Bumped up to 5* and thanks again to the owner for...
Read moreNot what it used to be. I used to enjoy going here on a weekend, taking in the mess and chaos, seeing a whole lot of cool stuff, and coming away with a bargain or two. Now they seem to have gotten greedy, they're no longer open on weekends, and the interactions I've had with manager/owner people have not been pleasant. I found an old piece of audio equipment that I was interested in. It was dirty, dented, scratched but appeared to be complete. I plugged it in and it erroneously thought that it had a disc in it. (Not a good sign.) The kid working the front counter checked the price told me that it would be $200. The kid called Adam to the front and I explained to him that it seemed to have a problem and would he be willing to discount it. He very grudgingly said, "One fifty." I said, "How about one hundred?" He looked at me like I had just told him that his child was ugly and angrily said, "I can't discount it by fifty percent!" Like, 50% of what? Your arbitrary extremely high price? You probably paid five bucks for it, dude. Or perhaps nothing at all. So they didn't get any money from me today. It's a fun place to go and look around, but it's more of a curio museum than a place to buy stuff as a hobbyist. They are also mostly prop rental now, it seems. Well, too bad. Another good...
