Terminal Island — Local services in Los Angeles

Was this island made for the terminally ill? Can someone please explain as to what brought this name upon the island, on my journey when I visited this island I did see multiple feral cats scratching around at the rubbish. One of the busiest ports in the world. It's an amazing drive at night crossing the Vincent Thomas and Gerald Desmond bridges.
