I left Black Rock City to find a message from my husband that says "hold tight to your dreams" amongst 200 other messages to follow up on. I have a new nephew, Ashton. He was born the day that I arrived at Lovelock - Black Rock City.
What did I see, learn or do that made me want to come back year after year? My camp mates were wonderful. I got to work side by side with the legendary John Brennan loading films, Polaroids and coaching the subjects to "do something"! I met faithful subjects from the past burns that couldn't get enough of John Brennan's brilliant work or art. A group of people waited over 4 hours through a whiteout one day hoping to have their pictures taken. It never happened because the weather conditions continued to be severe throughout the night. I was so amazed of their dedication and appreciation for John's talent.
At the gate, I was welcomed home as a virgin where I rolled in the dirt, rung a bell and screamed out loud "I am a burner"! This made me feel strange and dirty during the middle of a whiteout but the words "welcome home" wrapped in a huge hug made me all emotional inside. I quietly whispered to myself, Am I home? The whiteout gave little visibility. My allergies couldn't handle all of this alkaline in my mouth, eyes, nose and ears. I begin to question what mysterious force brought 70,000 people to this godforsaken place?
After setting up camp, we had somewhat of a shelter. I started to see the amazing art creations, mind blowing mutant cars and poorly dressed people of all ages running around by foot, bikes, skateboards, scooters, segways and whatever else you can imagine. They brought tears of laughter to my eyes. There were music of all kinds, people from all parts of the world and talents from every corner of the universe all mingling and having a great time. I was given more gifts than I could wear and more hugs than a family Christmas party. The gift of a cut out metal pendant of the man reminded me that we are all here to see the man burn at the end of the week. The gift of ring that said "the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" answered questions that addressed both my mind and my heart's curiosity of why everyone was here.
What touched me the most was the gift of fire. This gift came as simple words from a stranger that encouraged me to believe in myself and to walk away from anything that is bad for me. I was exposed to a love so sincere, pure and gentle, yet so powerful. I felt as though I was touched by an angel. This gift was magical. I don't know what I was looking for, but I found more than I could ever dreamed of.

Read moreStunning and awesome. Drive as fast as you like for miles and miles. Wonderful solitude unless you go during Burning Man. Having lived in the area at one time, there were several reasons we took that route. But, seeing Fly Geyser was high on the list. But, it's on private property and you can barely see it from the road. Unfortunately, we tried a number of times over a three week period to get any response at all from the Burning Man association. The website says there are guided tours available, but, no one would respond to our request for information. Very dissatisfied. Oh, and the railroad cars really are buried out there. I was living there when they caught fire. A local told me there's a myth about a fortune being in those boxcars. There was, gold! I got some, golden...
