Thanks for dancing with me! Lower Brule is one of the friendliest communities I've been to in South Dakota this far. It is the largest community in Lyman County (pop. 703) and the administrative capital of the Lower Brule Reservation (1,308)! Unfortunately, it has a child poverty rate of 59.5% and a median family income of $30,500. One scene that struck me was a federal infrastructure law sign (with no construction in sight) with an abandoned, collapsing house behind it. Despite the blight in the CDP, it is by far the most lively place (of similar size) I've visited in the state. In South Dakota, these capitals are rarely county seats. Thus, "Oglala and Dakota" and Todd Counties do not have county seats (with the admin. centers being in neighboring counties), and Buffalo County's county seat, Gann Valley, is the smallest in the U.S. with 10 (or 12) people. One horrible thing is, among the boys I spoke to, many of them had had their dogs stolen (by out-of-towners). It is common in many places for dogs to roam free (similar places I've seen include Tuba City and El Cenizo). I attended the volleyball game last night, hence why I recorded inside the high school. The students I spoke to last night asked me to go to the homecoming parade today. It was Disney-themed! and each grade had a different movie as its theme. Lower Brule competes in the All-Nations Football Conference 9B, and the team is looking to win its third straight championship! Much of South Dakota plays 9-man football due to school sizes. The All-Nations conference is in its 6th season, and it consists of schools with 50%+ Native American student enrollment in SD and NE Nebraska.
