I played Man 'O War from the second to farthest back tee box, the course was in pretty decent shape considering it's mid November. The fairways are fine, the tee boxes are ok and the greens for the most part were good, but a few of them were pretty beat up. The lay out in my opinion isn't great. It felt a little unfair, it really handicaps long hitters and forcing us to not be able to use length as an advantage due to so many holes forcing a tee shot with an irom. The 3rd hole is a great example of this, huge 40ft knob at 285 yards so you have to lay back with an iron and if you hit it in the middle of the fairway you are blocked out and cant see the green. I could see it being a golf course you could come to love after 10 rounds or so, but first time playing its pretty unfair. Several holes you cant see the green complex, only the flag so there is no real way to tell where the hole is on the green, so you may think you have room left or right of the pin but in reality its tucked in the corner of the green, and the gps doesn't show you this. Not a fun golf course the first time you play it, got penalized for great shots a few times simply because you cant see...
Read moreThis was one of the most beautiful golf courses I've ever golfed. My three friends and I played Man O'War. The links style course was very well maintained and gorgeous. I would play here anytime just for the magnificent view that the course provides. However, I had the WORST customer service I have ever encountered on a golf course. We were a 4 man group playing 18 holes. The cart provides us with our pace and we played according to that pace. We finished the round in just over 4 hours. However, multiples times throughout the round members of the staff would harass us into playing faster. They said we were playing too slowly. But, there was no other groups around. We were not a burden to any other groups. Toward the end of our round, it was starting to get darker and we were on the 18th hole, a worker told us we needed to pick it up and we were the slowest players ever. This unnecessarily rude comment really dampened my experience. He also flagrantly accused my group of leaving the course and going to the car and returning to the hole when we did no such thing. Even though this was one of the best courses, and most fair greens I've played the service wrecked...
Read moreAm I crazy? Played both GR courses as a group of 8 and we couldn’t have been any more disappointed. This was an absolute shock for us because we’ve played the courses before on multiple occasions and were stunned by the condition. Every green was so overwatered that it was like putting on a plinko green. It didn’t matter the size of any golfer. Every step we took left a footprint so by the end of the day, putting on the spongy greens was an adventure in bumps left, bumps right, bumps in the air. The tee boxes were in rough shape. Two stars because the staff were excellent. But all eight of agreed that it likely wasn’t worth a return visit.
I do acknowledge reality courses are a challenge because you don’t have members taking care of divots, bunkers, etc. But when the course conditions are as rough as they were, it obvious others felt no need to care for the course.
Too bad and like anything, maybe we caught it in a bad day, but these five star reviews are hard...
