Let me just start off my saying… I was forced to do my own hair and make up for my elopement because it was during the thick of the pandemic and I wasn’t able to hire or work with anybody. On the day of my elopement, I was stressed and sweating and cussing up a storm. If you’re on the fence about dropping that cash for some hair and make up on your special day — splurge. Go with Maui Make Up Artistry. Get the full package if you can afford it. It’ll not only help you feel at your most beautiful and best, but it’ll also save you a ton of stress and headache by having amazing professionals who are experienced and know what they’re doing.

Anyways, after my husband and I eloped, we still wanted to have our “big wedding” to celebrate with our loved ones. I ended up doing a ton of research then decided to go with Liz and Anna. They were very communicative and great from the start. I was nervous because we were coming from San Francisco and doing a destination wedding in Maui, so I had no time fly over and test things out as much as I had hoped for. I just sent some inspiration photos over and had to trust that they’ll get it right. Thankfully, they squeezed me in for a trial run a couple of days before the wedding. I still felt nervous because this didn’t allow me any time to make any major changes should I wanted to go with someone else.

Thankfully, Liz and Anna were the perfect people to help me and my sister in law for the special day. They knew exactly what to do for both me (Korean) and my sister in law (Chinese)! I went for a more glam and darker, smokier look while my sister in law went for a more natural and subtle glam look. They knew how to do Asian/East Asian make up for both of our Asian features and hair texture. They made both of our hair and make up BULLET PROOF as well. I was nervous about the humidity in Hawaii as both my and sister in law’s hair don’t hold curls well. Both of our hair and make up held up throughout the entire day. My husband had a pimple on the morning of the wedding! OH NO! Crisis averted. Anna said not to worry and she squeezed in a little touch up for my husband to conceal his little pimple friend. Phew!

The cherry on top was how wonderful it was to work with both Liz and Anna. Complete professionalism while still being warm, funny, and so personable and supportive. We had so many great conversations which eased the nerves. They truly went above and beyond. I felt like royalty.

I tried my best to do my research and ultimately disappointed with my experience. Usually you get your makeup done first and then your hair but in my situation I got my hair done first then makeup. On top of that my hairstylist arrived 15 mins late. She did a good job but it was hard to judge because my face was bare. I don't know why they switched it up for me but it made me loose confidence in my overall look. What was really hurt me was that the makeup artist really struggled with my face. I wanted a dewy glowy look but my makeup looked flat and it made my face long and matte. She did her best to try to fix it but it never got to the look I wanted. She also took longer than expected and made me late to my own wedding by 25 mins. She tried to assure me people are always late but my photographer had already arrived and I missed 25 mins shooting pictures with her. This impacted the whole wedding and it caused me to cut my 'first look' pictures short, I skipped a whole outfit change and I wasn't able to take group pictures with my guests as planned. I was very upset. I understand the makeup artist tried her best but I dont think she knew how to work my face. I even sent her pictures of the look I was going for ahead of time, including pictures of me. I wish they would have sent someone who was good with my features.

Also the makeup artist forgot she was suppose to do my friends makeup too....

Update:

Liz reached and personally clarified a few things that would be helpful. From her end, there was miss communication where the artist did not receive pictures of myself. She also explained why they choose to do hair first and then make up second -- which was due to better before and after photos. Liz also said the makeup artist was aware she had to do 2 makeup looks but she got confused at who was who because the wedding planner did not specify.

We both agreed things could have been better if we had a consultation especially since I was going for a mixed between eastern and western look. I know I am particular with looking a certain way and I had express my concerns to my wedding planner but she never arranged any plans for me to talk to my makeup artist. I think a lot of this could have been prevented if we had a conversation.

I really do appreciate how Liz also asked for feedback in where the overall look was lacking. We got along really well and even shared what makeup products we like. She also refunded me the holiday fee. So I'm updating this to 4/5 stars for the effort that Liz put in to make...
