I've been here often, and as a father, it's an easy place to take the kids off the connected world and still get a few agates (though small and hard sought) where the kids can still have fun and the water is nice either at the river or in the lake.
But I wanted to post a review since so many I've talked with get Google into the outback far away. The simple route I know is as follows from newberry.
Just a shout out before I go further. (NOT THE WINTER PATH UNLESS YOU WANT TO HOPE A FLEET OF SNOWMOBILES ARE AROUND TO PULL YOUR VAN BACK OUT OF THE MANY POSTED SEASONAL ROAD SIGNED PATH OR WAIT FOR THE THAW)
North on 123, leaving newberry. Keep going north like you're going to the tahquamenon falls. Shortly after you pass MI Dog ( the dog sledding place on the left), you will come around a bend. Turning left off of 123 onto 500. I follow 500 until I come to 414, then turn left. Follow that to 423 and turn right. Follow that road to the end, pass the airport and the rainbow lodges, and then you will be there. There are lots of other roads or two tracks, but the real wide dirt road is what you want, not any of the narrow ones or the two track ones
123 north Left on 500 Left 414 Right 423

Read moreIncredible spot! We've been 2 years in a row. Pit toilets. Potable water. Dumpsters. THE BEST rock hounding evar! Hiking. Behind the farthest north east camp spot in the 2nd camp area is a trail up a hill. On top of this hill is a beautiful overlook with a bench. 10/10. DO NOT blindly follow Google maps out there as most of it is offroad trail. The main road is 30 miles of gravel so you have to use good judgement. Once you find your way there, that's the only road. Don't try to shortcut across 2 heart landing road to Crisp point light house unless you're 4WD and ready for action. You should go way back south and cut across...
