Split Spirits — Local services in Middlebury

The good- nice place with a tasting room/bar as well as a patio. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the offerings. Tasting of their base spirits is free.

The bad- the spirits are not very good. They all have that harsh burn going down that smacks of cheap booze. The gin tasted like moldy hay, the bourbon went down like paint thinner, and the maple tequila was just bizarre. Noticed several other customers leave samples and drinks on the bar unfinished, which is pretty telling as to their thoughts as well.

Maybe they're still getting things dialed in or had an "off" batch, but I really couldn't recommend it currently. The location has potential, but the product is not worth a trip.

Apparently the notion that someone doesn't like their booze is so incomprehensible to the owner that their only possible conclusion is that I have never actually been there.. They suggest/accuse I'm either writing fake reviews for jollies, or being paid to.

Now you mention it though, my paycheck from Big Liquor to write middling, 3 star reviews hasn't shown up yet. I'll have to call the A/P department at Big Liquor, Inc and see where it is. Thanks for the reminder....

This is the worst tasting vodka I've ever tasted! I've drank about half of the 750ml bottle an don't feel like I've drank a glass of wine. Absolutely gross. I've tried a plain cranberry and vodka cocktail as well as a white Russian...... just rancid! Worst decision I've made was to buy local vodka from Appalachian Gap distillery....! 0 star rating. To be fair I'd rather buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol! I'd already get taste and feel something.. can't stress the amount of disappointment! You want local from vt, buy...

If you happen to be in Middlebury, VT you have to visit this distillery! The owner is friendly and gladly tells you how he came up with his specialty liquors. I am NOT a gin drinker...never have been. But I loved his Mythic Gin and bought a bottle and, sadly, it is almost gone already less than a week after purchasing it. I will buy more on my next visit.
