I have been around this Navy Base since the late 90’s. When we first moved here, the base was a complete 180 as to what it is now. It’s embarrassing that this place is an active duty base. There USED to be much more for kids to do; including a bowling alley, library, and a pool. Bowling alley? Tore down. Library? Tore down. Pool? Turned into a nice decoration. Every active duty base I’ve been on has a 24 hour gas station, or at least one that doesn’t close before dark. Not to mention, you USED to be able to get liquor from the gas station as it was convenient. For some reason, they felt the need to change it to beer and wine only. Also, believe it or not, there used to be more than one place to eat! There was a Taco Bell, McDonald’s (which is now a pointless furniture store that I guess has the ability to hand you a recliner in the drive-thru), and a Subway that is surprisingly still in operation. Also, have fun detouring around town to get on base after hours. Did you know there is a ‘nature trail’ on base?! It might be hard to find with all the tall grass and overgrown trees disguising it, but it’s there! Oh yeah, there is also a hotel that is of course not in use and looks like something out of I Am Legend. Need some quick cash? Ha! Good luck. The ATM ramp leads to a nice brick wall. But wait, isn’t there a bank on base? Not anymore. And drive cautiously because there are massive pot holes EVERYWHERE! This place needs a...
Read moreBase size is small, I am from an Army Reserve unit on post near the Singleton entrance. Commissary is dated, been the same inside since i was 5, the NEX is undergoing a facelift after all these years, and sells most of what youd find on a larger base. The "tracks" are asphalt or concrete so running here will do a number on your knees if you have joint pain. Helmsman food is buffet quality, only gotten sick a hand full of times (better than food youd get at a camp). The Navy INN is good quality for the money, I would recommend over any hotel under $75 in town. However if you are going to school here, expect to be put in the hotel buildings behind Navy INN (Unless youre an Officer) they consist of 1990s furniture set up in a college dorm style. Or if youre unit is strapped for cash you get housed on the far north east past the base housing. REC center is nice, internet is OK wouldnt suggest you play any games online if youre unto it. Free pool table and darts, decent movie selection for their small theatre. The package store however is excellent
The post isnt bad, the surrounding town really has nothing for you except a few medium-low quality restaurants. Closest nice resturants are 25 minutes away in Bartlett. And closest activities are 35 away in Memphis/Cordova.
I would say 4/5 but the surrounding town has gone down hill with old military personnel dying/moving out and people who dont care for the...
Read moreBase is run down and it is very sad to see. To know this is a base where the Navy brings top leadership in from around the fleet to decide who promotes to the next level is a shame!!! Grounds keeping is terrible and a waste of tax payer dollars!!! The NEX is full of out of date items with limited service not to mention inadequate Barbershop skills!!!!!! . The only place to eat after base operating hours is Samuel Adams Pub and it’s by far the biggest climax service failure!! It’s hours of being advertised as open does not matter!! Don’t plan on eating a meal there because the individuals that get paid to open the services come and go as they see fit!! Not once in five days have I seen them abide by the schedule. !! Here’s to the worlds greatest...
