We have had the privilege of visiting similar fairs across three continents. Namely North America, Europe & Africa. But nothing as quite unique and unforgettable as the NDSF. The North Dakota State Fair, held annually in Minot, is a vibrant celebration of the state's rich agricultural heritage, community spirit, and diverse culture. Since its inception in 1922, the fair has grown to become one of the premier events in North Dakota, attracting visitors from across the state and beyond.
A hallmark of the North Dakota State Fair is its deep connection to agriculture, reflecting the state's roots in farming and ranching. The fairgrounds come alive with livestock competitions, where farmers and ranchers proudly showcase their finest cattle, sheep, pigs, and horses. These events not only celebrate the hard work and dedication of the agricultural community but also provide an educational experience for visitors, offering a glimpse into the realities of farm life and the importance of agriculture in daily living.
In addition to its agricultural focus, the fair offers a myriad of attractions and entertainment options that cater to all ages and interests. The midway, with its array of carnival rides, games, and food stalls, is a perennial favorite, providing thrills and delights to families and thrill-seekers alike. Live music is another major draw, with the fair consistently featuring top-tier national and local acts. The grandstand concerts, encompassing a variety of genres from country to rock, make for unforgettable summer nights under the North Dakota sky.
Moreover, the fair is a platform for showcasing local talent and crafts. The exhibition halls are filled with displays of handmade quilts, baked goods, homegrown produce, and other entries in various competitions. These exhibits highlight the creativity and skills of North Dakotans, fostering a sense of pride and community.
Educational programs and demonstrations also play a significant role in the fair's offerings. From 4-H and FFA activities to agricultural technology showcases, these programs provide valuable learning opportunities for young and old alike. They emphasize the fair's commitment to promoting knowledge and innovation in agriculture, ensuring that the state's agricultural traditions continue to thrive in the modern era.
The North Dakota State Fair is more than just an event; it is a reflection of the state's identity and values. It brings people together, creating a sense of community and shared experience. Whether one is a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, the fair offers a unique and enriching experience that captures the essence of North Dakota’s culture and heritage. As it continues to evolve, the North Dakota State Fair remains a cherished tradition, celebrating the past, present, and future of the state's vibrant...
Read moreLots of fun rides for all ages! Two teens in line told us that a different company was contracted to do the rides this year. They were disappointed that the "Zipper" was gone, but said there were more thrill rides.
Most of the riders wore the unlimited rides wristband, but we chose to do just a few rides because we arrived after 9pm. We found the ticket kiosks (yellow tents) and clicked on the touchpad screen. I selected the "new card" option, but you could also choose "reload/view balance". I paid with $20 cash (I can't remember if you could pay in other ways - sorry!).
Keep in mind that there are no refunds and no change given. They also charged a $2 convenience fee, so the plastic card that popped out only had 18 points on it. Most of the kiddie rides cost 3 points, the ferris wheel, slides, and others were 4 points, and then the best thrill rides were 5 points. Each ride operator scanned the QR code on our card and let us ride. Later I checked the balance at the kiosk and it took a while to find how to scan my card. Hint: It's not under the machine like the screen leads you to believe, but it's a white NFC/scan pad posted on the side of the black computer towers.
Anyway, for an evening date, we had...
Read moreI was assaulted at a concert during the North Dakota State Fair and immediately went to law enforcement with video footage and photos of the person. I was told by the officer that they “couldn’t go in because they had guns,” and when I requested they send security instead, they refused. I asked to file a police report on the spot, and it took over two hours and a call to my attorney before an officer would come speak with me.
Even worse, I’ve reached out to the State Fair Board four times via phone and email. No one has responded. Not a single call back. The local police later claimed they “couldn’t find the person,” despite the clear evidence I had. Next time send staff in to apprehend her when she is at the event!
This was a terrifying and frustrating experience. Parents, please warn your children to be extremely cautious if attending. The event is dangerously understaffed with security, and unless you are severely injured, you may receive little to no help.
To the State Fair Board: shame on you for ignoring victims and failing to take accountability. Do better. I will never return, and I would gladly pay triple to attend a concert elsewhere if it means keeping myself and...
