Wow, just wow! Although we arrived a bit late, the view and the soothing sound of the river and breeze are absolutely incredible. The viewpoint is stunning, and the short trail to get there is easy enough. But do watch out for wildlife—it can be a bit unnerving. Still, it’s all worth it for a one-of-a-kind...

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park 1 Day Itinerary Save to plan your visit. Arrive at Park 9 AM or earlier to stay ahead of the crowds. Even though this is a quieter national park, you’ll enjoy more solitude if you arrive early. Stop 1: Tomichi Point—Make sure to take the Rim Rock trail below the paved overlook for the best viewpoint. (Skip the visitors center and viewpoints. You’ll stop on the way back out. This allows you to stay ahead of the crowds) Stop 2: Pulpit Rock Overlook Stop 3: Cross Fissures View take in all the crazy rock formations and spires Stop 4: Chasm View- see the narrowest point of the canyon Stop 5: Painted Wall - By far our favorite viewpoint in the park! Stop 6: High Point and the Warner Point Hike (1.9 miles RT) Beautiful views of Uncompahgre Valley and distant peaks of the San Juans lead to views of the canyon and river. Stop 7 : Drive back to the visitors center and the Gunnison Viewpoint. You can hike a short distance Rim Rock nature trail for more views. Stop 8: Drive the East Portal Road to the bottom of the Canyon to hike the Primitive trail by the Gunnison River. (Especially great if you can’t secure the permit to hike below the rim. Remember to practice leave no trace. #nationalparklover #visticolorado #westslope #colorfulcolorado #hikingadventures #blackcanyonofthegunnison #findyourpark #nationalparks #amongthewild #stayandwander
