What a fantastic golf course! Very, very impressed. One of the two times I played was with a local who drove an hour in traffic just to play this course. That has to say a lot about the quality of golf. Both times I played were in the afternoon and when it starts to get dark and all the animals start coming out, this place is very special. Just be sure to get out of there before it gets really dark. One time I was out at that point and we heard about a dozen coyotes howling. Since I was walking, that was a little unnerving.
The golf course sits in a valley and is relatively flat. You walk downhill on the front 9 and come back up toward the clubhouse. The back 9 goes up the hill and then comes back down to finish. The course is mostly open but has a couple of tricky tee shots. A lot of times the short cut adds a lot of danger, whether that be a small but deep bunker, short trees, or rocky terrain. The greens are really cool. Lots of undulation and a bigger fringe cut than you would see at any other golf course. Plus, the fringe is askew from the green. Very hard to explain but very cool to me. Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford were definitely on their game. The local told me that every green breaks a little more towards the gate you drive through. The grain of the grass points in that direction. That was very helpful.
The driving range has a decent amount of space. The putting green is a part of 18 green which is cool, but a little unnerving when I bladed a ball through the green. I definitely apologized to the kid practicing back there. Can't wait to come back and play...
Read moreAfter disappointing experiences at almost every course within driving range of Pasadena, I had low expectations for my trip to Rustic Canyon. How refreshing it was to not only start on time, but actually teed off a few minutes early for a 10:00 am tee time on a Sunday. On the first tee, we had plenty of space from the group in front of us, and did not have to wait on them the entire day. Also because there was adequate time between tee times, we never felt rushed by the group behind us, and it didn't appear they ever had to wait on us to finish. The course was in much better condition that I was expecting given the lack of rain. Everyone is the group mentioned how the greens were in excellent shape. If there were any areas for improvement, I would say raking of the greenside bunkers. I don't really mind if the waste bunkers or fairway bunkers are hard packed, but a few of the greenside bunkers were hard to escape from as they were not very soft.
After this experience I am willing to drive an hour each way and pay the $80 to play Rustic Canyon again. I really hope they continue to run the course in the same manor, and not try to jam on way to many groups like all of the other...
Read moreRustic Canyon, that little gem tucked away in the mountains near Moorpark off the Regan freeway where the greens are always impossible to read cut really tight and I 3-putt each hole (that’s actually generous) which is more strokes than it actually took to arrive at the green. I always recommend early morning sessions because the wind can be very unpredictable as can crowd. You’ll often find yourself backed up at least a few times particularlyon weekends. Pro shop is great food pretty solid although there’s an incredible tri-tip and chicken place that’s very close. That’s way better. The name of the place is called something something something number three you should go there instead. Rustic has a lot of acreage. Everything spread out : very safe, a few challenging holes, and a few drivable par 4s…. A great golf experience very close to Los Angeles at the right time but if you leave at the wrong time then it’s a very great golf experience that takes forever to get to or get from . If it’s any time past April, definitely take a cart.. pace of play can be an issue but the same is true about pretty...
