We did a dog sledding tour with Dave and Heather and it was immediately obvious they care tremendously about their business, and what they do. From the moment Dave arrived he was attentive, informative, and very welcoming, making my wife and I feel like fast friends. While educating us, Heather arrived with Libby, Einstein, and Oppie, their 8 week old puppies! ❤️ after some puppy time, and K9 athlete introductions, Dave got things moving with our adventure. We took an incredible 16 mile round trip across frozen lakes, and almost touching the Canadian border, all while making sure we were confident in our commands, and constantly checking in on us to make sure we didn't need any help. After the tour, Dave asked us three seemingly simple questions: most favorite, least favorite things about the adventure, and any recommendations on how to improve. This took us more than 4 days to come up with, because we loved the experience so much!
The only recommends we were able to come up with were: possibly getting name tapes for the dogs collars; or a dry erase board inside the sled with your team's names offering photos with the dogs (even at an additional cost) before or after the trip we found the turn around to be a challenge. Perhaps additional instruction prior to the turn to prevent a moment of panic or injury to the athletes?
The negative (yep, only one!): we couldn't remember the dogs names to save our lives! 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️
The positive: we loved the wooded portion of the trail. It was so beautiful and serene the level of interaction this experience offers - We were made to feel as though we were part of the team! Dave was so intuitive, and attentive. He clearly cares deeply about his dogs, craft, and the business he's building! Both Heather and Dave genuinely cared about our opinion and feedback, asking for the good and bad, wanting to improve to build things as positively as possible. most importantly, THE PUPPIES!!!!
Thank you, for the camping recommendations, information, and an overall...
Read moreMy husband and I came to Ely, MN to stay in a cabin for a week Feb 2024. The highlight of the week was our dog sledding and ice fishing experience with Cast Outdoor Adventures. We are in our 60s and have done a lot of things, traveled a lot, and have had a lot of neat experiences but we have to say, by far, this was our most exciting experience in our entire life and we will probably never have an experience like this again. In fact, I KNOW we won’t! What I thought was going to happen was an occasional try at mushing, but mostly riding in the sled. That is not what happened. My husband and I ended up mushing the entire trip. The dogs are amazing. The scenery is amazing. The fishing was amazing. I mushed on the way out and my husband mushed on the way back. Although I was a little scared, and it was a workout to some degree I’m so glad I did it and I’m proud of myself for mushing and experiencing something so amazing. I want to emphasize how amazing the dogs are. They know what they’re doing. They are sweet and lovable, and well disciplined. Part of the fun was snuggling with the dogs. We loved them. We caught so many northern pike. It was my first time ice fishing. There was a wonderful Corn chowder lunch for us. David and Peter were so knowledgeable about dog sledding and fishing and the area in general. we never felt rushed. It was definitely catered to our experience and what we wanted. We were so excited when we got back to our cabin, we could hardly sleep and we haven’t stopped talking...
Read moreDog sledding with David was amazing! What an incredible experience. The dogs are lovely and extremely well taken care of and are clearly enjoying their life running through the snow! We did the sunset sledding trip, which was beautiful, definitely the best time! The serenity of silently sledding through the dark snowy forest lit only by the light of the moon was magical, and that’s still an understatement! The entire experience was top notch. David picked us up at our lake cabin to make sure we wouldn’t get lost (great service!), after which we drove for about 15 minutes to a place he picked that would have enough snow (we were the first trip of the season). He let us help gear and line up the dogs, made sure we had enough clothes to stay warm (the over-boots and over-gloves he provided were life savers!) and explained everything about the dogs and their lives. Then we took off, and after a bit he let us control the sled and the dogs. We never done anything like this, but he made it easy (and remained in control of course, to make sure everything went well).
The entire experience was excellent (and despite the snow, and us coming from 80+ Florida weather a few days earlier, not too cold either - apart from my toes which turned into ice cubes).
If you are considering dog sledding, absolutely do not hesitate to go with David and Cast Outdoor Adventures, this was the highlight of our...
