This is a year-round ferry in Galilee, a fishing village located in Point Judith, which is also a village located in Narraganset, RI. The traditional ferry takes approximately 55 minutes one-way (from Galilee to Block Island) and cars and moped can be transported on it. There is a high speed ferry which takes approximately 30 minutes one-way but no cars are allowed on it. The ferry runs in other locations in the summer; those locations are Newport, RI, New London, CT, and Orient/Montauk, NY. Parking lots nearby are independently owned and there are fees associated with them.
A concession stand is located on the ferry; there's a full bar, hot dogs, snacks, coffee, and other drinks. There are restrooms too. We were able to walk around the ferry while it was moving. There were plenty of seats but it does get packed in the summer months. It's relaxing to just sit and watch the ferry cruise away. We brought our moped and was able to sit with it at the bottom floor. The way they load the cars are pretty impressive; it's a tight fit but they do maximize the space. I have fond memories of taking this ferry to the island. Tip: bring a light sweater, it can get chilly on the ocean; and of course, bring all your picnic essentials. Overall, I highly...
Read moreI drove an old friend to the Block Island boat in Galilee, Point Judith. He wanted to get back to his construction job. Only one boat a day now. Miss it and you will need to try again, tomorrow at 10 AM sharp. While there stopped into the fisf store and bought some scallops, pickled herring and smoked bluefish. Oh so good. What a treat! I grew up on Block Island, was a fisherman from 3 in the morning till 2 on th afternoon, then tended our fish market till 6 . Went home. Our house was next to tbe movie theater, just up the hill next to Mrs. Pikes. After supper we would take a bath, which was an interesting experience. We shared the hot water [heated by wood fire) in a 5 foot dia. galvanized container. Then to bed because 2AM comes pretty fast, and start all over. My foster moms name is Maizi Rose, married to Mel also John. Many people in doźzens if countries knew her because she was a taxi driver and a historian and she wrote her first and only book " BLOCK ISLAND SCRAPBOOK " published in 1956. I was just 16 then. She renamed me Huckleberry, long before that. Well, I'm leaving this story here for now and will get back to it sometime down the road if you...
Read moreThe boat ride was great. They offered food and drinks, lots of seating. The reason for the 4 stars, we bought bike tickets. The description for the bike/ electric bike is not clear. The tickets you buy with the block island ferry site, it is for you to bring your personal bike. If you want to ride a bike, you have to get the bike rentals on the island. They also have mopeds. An employee of the bike shop explained that people think they are getting a pre paid bike rental and they don't, plus you can't get a refund.
So we rented bikes on the island for all day 2 people for $60. They should have rented the bikes to us for 4 hours, because you have to return the bikes at 6 pm. We arrive at the island at 1pm. We returned the rented bikes early, FYI....not refunds if you return your bikes early. We are glad we returned the bikes early and are dinner across the street from the ferry. Because the line to ferry to return to RI was long AF. We just missed the 545 pm ferry. We waited in line for 30 min for the next ferry to arrive. Arrive early for the return ferry, You don't want to miss the last ferry of the day, next ferry is at 8am...
