My husband and I purchased custom-made bedroom furniture from Mavin Furniture Company. After waiting 6-8 weeks to receive the furniture, it was delivered with a wet varnish, which was sticky, and had an extremely harsh chemical odor, as well as an extremely harsh and irritating vanilla scent, that immediately caused eye, lung, and throat irritation, as well as ringing in the ears. The delivery person told us that the odor was so terrible, that we wouldn't be able to use the furniture for quite some time, nor should we sleep in the room until it had dissipated. We had to sleep on a mattress on the floor in the spare bedroom, which was very difficult to do, especially since my husband had just had major surgery. We contacted the company that we purchased the furniture from, and they were happy to let us return the furniture, even though custom-made furniture is normally not returnable. When the delivery people came to remove the furniture, they informed us that when it gets to their warehouse, and is placed in a specific aisle with other products from the same company, the smell is extremely overwhelming.
The furniture has been out of our house for 3 weeks, but the harsh odor from the vanilla additive they put in the varnish is still overwhelmingly strong in the room. The odor has seeped into our laminate flooring, as well as our bedroom walls. This odor is affecting my husband's health in a negative way. If he is in the bedroom, he is having chest pains, having trouble breathing, his eyes swell, his nose begins to run uncontrollably, and his ears get an immediate pressure sensation. Needless to say, he can't sleep in the bedroom. We contacted the Mavin Company several times about our problem, and were told that it wasn't their problem since they didn't sell the furniture to us, that they only manufactured it. We were offered no solutions to the problem, nor were we offered any advice on how to get rid...
Read moreBeing in our 60s, my wife wanted to get our final bedroom set while we were redoing our master bedroom. We went to Douds and we fell in love with the Mavin furniture line. We ordered 5 pieces for our master, all custom sized , and wood and hardware. It took several months to come and is exactly what we ordered. With carpet, mattress and furniture we were in the 20 grand range but it was worth it and everyone that has seen it loves it, every night we go to sleep in our little sanctuary. I cannot express how happy we are with Mavin and Douds furniture.,.... Update; It's been a little over a year and all the trim moulding is shrinking to point that there are large gaps in the corners and base moulding on one night stand is almost completely detached. Mavin , in my opinion, did not kiln dry this lumber properly and is blaming the humidity in our home for this problem even though no other wood furniture is doing this. I am totally unhappy with everyone involved and at this point I feel legal actions will have to be taken. This was a very expensive purchase and at this point strongly advise not to do business with this company.
Update 2: not even 12 hours of updating my review Douds called and informed us Mavin is completely remaking the bedroom furniture and Douds will be returning our set to Mavin to be repaired and sent back to Douds to sell in their showroom. I am going to reserve changing my review until this transpires. Once everything is made whole my rating will go back to 5 star because the bedroom suite without the defects is outstanding...
Read moreIf you value your money, do not buy any of their furniture. I ordered a $6K dining room table set through Cleveland Furniture Company - Macon table with simone chairs. The day they delivered the table, i noted that the chairs are unable to slide under the table. The Macon base prevents them from sliding under. I can not even slide two chairs under each side as the double base width is one inch shorter then the width of two chairs. I had ordered 8 chairs - i cant even use 6 with this table. I called my sales representative - Laramie on the same day of delivery about the flawed design. She told me she will work with Mavin to get it corrected. Apparently, Mavin had put out some notice about the Macon base having this issue 2 weeks after she placed my order to them. My anger is at why they built it if they knew it was a problem? How did it even pass the inspection at the warehouse? Laramie finally told me after 2 months that Mavin agreed to replace the table and chairs. I went back to the store and chose a new design with her. I call back a month later and am told by the manager that Mavin never agreed to replace the table set and Laramie doesnt work at that store anymore.
Poor customer service from both Cleveland Furniture company and especially Mavin for lying and not correcting their mistake. DO NOT buy anything from this company. I have a Canadel kitchen table set and never experienced anything like this when i bought their furniture. I should have bought Canadel again, but wanted to support local Ohio owned companies - No good deed...
