Don't believe what others are saying about this being a cakewalk... this is a challenging but also incredibly rewarding hike. There are 4 main obstacles on the trail that have been affectionately named by myself.
Roller Coaster- the first obstacle you encounter on Jackson. Includes several rapid up and down sections that will deplete some of your energy before you even start truly gaining elevation.
River Junction- this section contains many streams and rivers that you must cross to continue on the trail. Depending on the weather, the rocks can be very slippery and the water can be flowing quite fast.
Raining Rapids- this section contains a creek that is literally synonymous with the trail. If it's been raining a lot, this section will have water coming down the mountain directly towards you, and also watch for slick moss.
The Scramble- this is the final and most difficult obstacle on this mountain, especially coming down. It's a probably 150 foot rock scramble separating you from the summit. Winds can also howl at this elevation so be prepared to wear layers while on your hands and knees.
However, once you complete all the obstacles, you will be rewarded with absolutely incredible views, and I mean it. I would highly recommend going in the fall with the foliage, the view into Mt Washington and Crawford notch is truly spectacular. And one good thing about these obstacles is that most of them have flat, gradual sections after them, making most of the hike fairly easy when compared to...
Read moreJackson is an easy hike for most and a favorite of families. It is well travelled and expect a busy summit on a beautiful fall day. The grades are generally moderate until a modest scramble near the top through leges and rocks will have you using hands and feet together. Time to the top will vary by your ability, but planning on a 2-1/2 hr climb will cover most people in good condition.
The view north toward Mt. Washington is excellent, though late season Canadian fires obscure these shots a bit... Watch your lunch as the camp robber (Canadian Gray Jay) will go for any food left briefly unattended. Hold a bit of granola in your hand and you may be lucky enough to get one to eat from it. ...
Read moreHiked up the Jackson Webster trail Saturday May 11, 2019 was my first time on Jackson and I highly recommend! I would say that this is a moderate to hard hike and wouldn’t recommend for beginners. A short while after the junction we ran into about 3 feet of snow so just keep that in mind that there is still snow this time of year and you may consider packing your spikes. Steep trail it’s a bit rough but not to bad. Make sure you check the weather before you head up as the weather can change rapidly in the area. If your looking for an enjoyable day on the trail then definitely check out...
