I called Plumber Near Me to come out & give me a bid on attaching my mobile home’s plumbing to the new septic system & water line. They sent someone out who evaluated the scope of the job & said they charge a $69.00 fee for it that would be applied toward any work done if I decided to hire them for the job. I wasn’t happy about the fee, but paid it.

After payment I was informed I’d receive an email outlining the scope & cost. I received an email about five days later which showed their charges for the work. I had already secured another company to do the work as I needed it done ASAP & hadn’t received the promised email after two days.

When I opened their email, I was shocked to discover their cost was approximately $2,000 higher than I had paid another company to get the job done. Needless to say I felt I dodged a bullet by not using them.

I then thought their business dealings were questionable in these respects: 1. The business name causes their information to pop up on Google Maps anytime you access it to find a plumber near you (pretty clever). 2. they charge a fee just to come out & determine the scope of the job (which used to be the norm but not what I’ve experienced in the past year) 3. they then send an email showing an excessive fee to complete the job.

It seems their business plan is to respond to calls for service & collect the evaluation fee. If anyone is ignorant enough to agree to their fee, they’re happy to complete the job (an assumption). If you don’t use them to do the job, they’ve collected the eval fee so it’s a win-win for them & a definite loss for you.

It’s sad, but I’ve noticed a lot of businesses seem to be trying to recover from their losses from Covid by taking it off the backs of their customers who have also experienced losses from Covid.
