It has been sixty-three days since we arrived at this so-called “school survival camp.” What began as an exercise in teamwork and endurance has turned into something far beyond what any of us could have imagined. I have survived by relying on the wilderness—hunting wild animals, building fires with nothing but a laser pointer I happened to bring, and trusting my instincts above all else. The camp’s conditions grew harsher by the day. Food ran out weeks ago, and the struggle for survival became desperate. One by one, those who couldn’t endure fell. Thew and G-Man—gone, but not forgotten. Hunger changes people. Even friendship is no match for starvation. Sterling’s greed cost him everything; after he devoured what little food we had left, he too became part of our grim survival story. When our group was reduced to only a few of us, we took to the forest in search of something—anything—that could sustain us. A bear crossed our path, fierce but no match for our desperation. We ate quickly, almost instinctively, the taste of survival sharper than any fearLater, deep in the woods, we stumbled upon an abandoned, beaten-down car. It was barely standing, but with a few modifications, I believe it can run again. As the sun sets on Day 63, hope flickers like the fire we built beside it. If we can get the engine started by morning, we might finally find our way back.Tomorrow, Day 64, could be our way out—or just...
Read moreI was trapped. They didn’t care. I was alone, in the forest. I ate squirrels. I caught squirrels and cooked them in the salt and pepper I stole during the night. I basted the stringy meat in butter i made from the squirrel milk. You can't drink the water, it'll burn your stomach with lord knows what. The trees speak. They can hear what you say. They are not your friends. The forest has ears and supernatural powers. I took from the forest only what I could give back. I sacrificed my daily rations of cat food to the old gods who had been lurking in the main backwoods for millennia. The gods, or demons, whatever they may be, hide still in the confines of Camp Kieve. They took me to their reality. I could smell colors and see scents. I could perceive time wrapping and bending around me. I saw all that had ever happened and all that would come to pass. They chose me to carry their spirits into the world of mankind, and spread the word that they are coming to enslave the...
Read moreOur boys have had an amazing couple of summers at Kieve. They started as junior campers, and then progressed up to a full session, and would stay all summer if they could! They loved every minute of their Kieve experience. It offers a great balance of group and independent activity, all under the leadership of experienced counselors who are trained to bring out the best in each boy. The facilities are amazing, and the camp is located in the middle of an extraordinary wilderness. For the duration of their time at camp, they are without electronics... a big plus. We also appreciate that the campers come from all over the world. Our boys have shared cabins with boys from Bermuda, England, Spain, and Sweden, as well as across the US.
The camp director attended Kieve as a boy when his father was director, and is now doing an outstanding job of carrying on the Kieve tradition. We highly...
