The Kennebec River is a multifaceted gem. Whitewater rafters and kayakers enjoy the turbulence of the kennebec gorge north of The Forks. The river alternates between dammed stillwater and quicker water for several dozen miles until it enters Merrymeeting Bay in Richmond, the largest freshwater estuary on the Eastern seaboard. Leaving the bay, the waters of the Kennebec roar through the chops on the way to the sea. In Bath, the river goes by a General Dynamics shipbuilding facility that profits off our endless lust for war toys.
