In the fiercly competitive Interstate-80 rest stop scene, it can be hard for up and coming rest stops to break through. This is largely in part due to more established rest stops that have reigned supreme in the area for decades. And year after year, one rest stop continues to deliver in both service and cultural relevance. This is Rest Area I-80W MM 159.
Located only 250 convenient miles East from Denver and 250 West from Lincoln, Rest Area I-80W MM 159 is your ideal destination for a mid-trip break.
Upon entering, you're greeted by an enormous map to confirm that, yes, you are still in Nebraska! The gray tiled bathrooms and stalls are reflective of that beautiful countryside you've been staring at for the last six hours, which numbly rolls across your vision on the stall door in front of you as you do your busniess.
Take a moment as you unroll the 180-grit toiletpaper to appreciate the local art that is on display in each stall. Rest Area I-80W MM 159 features art from both local Nebraskan talent and travelers from all across America. Their work is proudly and often colorfully worded in a range of mediums from key scratches to sharpies to expletives to phone numbers. And no two stalls are exactly alike, certainly warranting more stops at Rest Area I-80W MM 159 in the future.
As you wipe your still-damp hands on the front of your jeans because of the 70s-era handdryers, you will certainly feel relaxed and culutred as you buckle back on up for the long haul.
Rest Area I-80W MM 159 is, hands down, still the best rest stop in Nebraska to poop and buy old...
Read moreSutherland Westbound Rest Area at milepost 159+94 is a well maintained facility. The architecture follows the same as the other Nebraska rest stations I reviewed before. It consists of a brick building with a tin roof. The men and women’s restrooms are located on either side of the building. The women’s restroom has 5 normal stalls and one handicapped one. There is only one sink in women’s restroom. The restrooms are clean and well stocked There are vending machines on the side of the building and they contain drinks and have the usual food and drinks except for a healthier option of tuna salad The picnic grounds are well maintained. Interesting thing about the picnic tables is that they are not sheltered unlike the other rest stations I have seen in...
Read moreThe facility was extremely clean and well maintained. Everything was well stocked when I went and it also had extra information about the surrounding areas outside. It is fairly small but offers outdoor seating for those who want to stop and stretch their legs, have some food, etc. Perfect during the spring or summer seasons. It has limited parking stalls so overnight parking isn’t available. 8 hours is the max you can spend at this rest area. Gave 5 stars because there’s cows right...
