Stopped in as part of the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and was lightly disappointed to see all the flavors on their posted photos weren't available at the tasting (specifically Fruit Punch). Tried their Apple Pie, Butterscotch, Frosted Orange, Frozen Head vodka and their Bloody Mary (made with Struggle Bus mix). Sadly, the best part was the Struggle Bus mixer. The butterscotch had a stale flavor that reminded me of the candy from Grandma's purse that had been there for months. The Frosted Orange tasted like cough syrup mixed with Sunkist. The Frozen Head vodka had an almost river water taste, not what I'm looking for in a vodka.
The prison itself was really cool, interesting to see the history and some of the weapons that were made by prisoners! Curiously none of the cells were unlocked except a select few in "the hole", and they were a bit crowded by guests to even take a closer look without having to come back later. There aren't very many pictures to show how the different areas were set up (such as cafeteria and visitation rooms), they are now just empty rooms leaving you to guess how much of a close quarters it was. No access to seeing the infirmary area - a bummer for a medical professional! The informational video shows at the top of the hour and half hour and is some history from former workers, decent video and worth the watch if you're into history.
Restaurant on site was too crowded to give it a try,...
Read moreNot a fan. Truly had had better moonshine at several other places. Didn't tour the prison, just went in to taste the offerings on the Whiskey Trail. This was the 1st place we encountered on the trail so far that charged us to taste. To me, the peach reminded me of cough medicine. The butterscotch only gave the flavor in a mild after taste and while the Whiskey was decent we found out they don't even distill it. The guy at the tasting bar told us they get it from Jim Bean and they age it in their own barrels for another 6 months. Kind of disappointing that they don't actually make their own. Now, if you buy something the tasting receipt gives you $5 off a purchase. To be honest, the best part was the bologna and pepper jack sandwich with curly fries! If doing the trail, go, choose your...
Read moreWe just happened to see a billboard for Brushy Mtn while on our trip to TN. What a great find! The owner was super nice and informative. The prison tour was creepy and no joke. It's also the place that housed MLKs infamous killer James Earl Ray. After our tour, we did a tasting and it was stronger than most of the other moonshine tastings, but really really good. There's a little place to eat called the Warden's table. My only disappointment was that they didn't offer the cocktails that are on their website- I guess they're just drink recipes. I think if they were offered, it would put this place...
