Who travels 2,500 miles to visit a general store for a Fried Bologna Sandwich? My Uncle, Dave Jessee does! We all thought it was kinda crazy, but man was it worth the 2.5hr drive from Spring Hill!
R.M. Brooks General Store is a historic landmark in Rugby, Tennessee, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Established in the early 1920s by R.M. Brooks and his wife Nettie, the store has been a cornerstone of the community since the 1930s, serving as a hub for social interaction, commerce, and political activity. Now operated by their great-granddaughter, Tiffany Jones Terry, and her children, the store retains its nostalgic charm, offering a step back in time with its pot-bellied stove, rocking chairs, and vintage memorabilia, including items like the stuffed parrot “Polly,” a fixture for over 40 years.
The store is renowned for its home cooked meals, particularly the “world-famous” fried bologna sandwich, homemade fried pies, burgers, and hoop cheese, earning high praise for quality and affordability. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with Tiffany and her staff treating guests like family, often engaging in heartfelt conversations. The store also sells antiques, local crafts, and unique repurposed items, blending history with modern appeal.
Beyond retail and dining, R.M. Brooks offers a campground and RV park, Brooks Corner, near Historic Rugby and the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. A unique accommodation, the “Tree House,” provides a quaint, electricity-free stay with battery-powered lights, praised for its peaceful ambiance despite basic amenities.
Historically, the store supplied Rugby and nearby Brewster-town with essentials, hosted voter registration, tax payments, and community events, and was a key stop for politicians campaigning in the area.
Its enduring legacy reflects American values of community and resilience, though it faces challenges balancing tradition with modern expectations. Reviews consistently highlight its authentic, “Mayberry-like” vibe, excellent food, and Tiffany’s hospitality, making it a must-visit for those seeking a taste of...
Read moreThis place is special, not in a cliche way...REALLY special. For those of you who will get it, the feeling is like a religious experience. This is not like a replica diner or an antique store. This place is real. This place has been in near-continuous operation as a general store for 100 years. The gas pump and Gulf sign outside (which are older than most people who will read this review) are original to the store. The floor standing horizontal Pepsi cooler...original and still used. Pot bellied stove?... Original and still used. Every board in the floor, every sign on the wall, the candy display cabinet, even the rocking chairs tell stories of people who came before us. These things preserved here paint a picture of a time passed better than anything I have ever seen. It is the story of the life and times of people of the area that live on though the determination and dedication of a woman who owns and operates the store of her ancestors. It is an almost haunting reflection of what our country used to be. Simpler, yes... but in that simplicity a link to time honored traditions that held our communities together and helped create a people that should be respected and honored. Through it's continued operation, RM Brooks store is an opportunity for your family to see the most authentic history lesson of every day people. If you stand back and look, you can almost see a wide eyed child from the sixties perusing the penny candy display or see a '56 Chevy roll up to the pump and request a fill-up and window wash. There are no places like this I have EVER seen. Come for the delicious food but, as you eat, take a few minutes to really look around and talk to the owner. This place will move you. You'll be glad...
Read moreI'm giving a five star review solely based upon the way that Tiffany has responded to the only couple poor reviews they have. Her response was professional and with required candor. That alone shows their dedication to business. Most don't even bother replying.
It's obvious that she and her team care deeply about their service and business reputation.
Being a small business owner myself, I understand how important reviews are and how hard it is to overcome unfair or even misplaced reviews (wrong business).
My wife and I are hoping to visit (from Indiana) this summer. I would never fathom thinking that our experience will mirror an edited video.
Preciate what your doing there and wish you all the best.
Edit / addition.......
My son and I visited yesterday and had a very pleasant time. Sometimes it sure seems that people, places and time exists, possibly for reasons beyond our complete understanding. This is that kind of place for many it seems. At least it was for us.
Tiffany, please don't get discouraged and instead, continue to provide the amazing service that goes WELL BEYOND bologna sandwiches and sweet tea.
Preciate ya and are very glad we met.
Jason and Cooper PS. The apple pies were...
