On Saturday, August 27, 2022, I went to DR Disc Golf in Orrington with six teenagers and one other adult for an outing as part of the program planned for the senior high youth of Pilgrim Church in Bangor. Each adult chaperoned three teens on the longer course for 18 holes of fun and challenge.
Several of us participated in a similar outing two or three years ago and it was great to see how much better the Orrington course is than it was before. The care that has been taken to maintain the property is much appreciated.
My knock on the site is the lack of information on the outside of the building where you pay to get in. It would've been great to know ahead of time that there were drinks and snacks available there! We sent in the one adult to pay for all of us, so we had no idea what there was in there. It would be easy enough to put a sign on the building, and I'm surprised they don't have one. Who wouldn't want more business coming their way? Indeed, proactive communication was the prominent element lacking at DR Disc Golf my last time there a few years ago and it's still an issue.
If that sort of thing doesn't bother you, or if it does but you can look past it to enjoy one of their great courses, go to DR and have some fantastic fun! If you're new to it, just be prepared with some aspirin for afterward, and bring water...
Read moreTL;DR: Lynx course is best, other two are short but ok. Courses are fun and well designed, very fun for the more advanced player. Prices are low. Bring good bug spray. Trees EVERYWHERE. Easy to find discs. Fantastic shop and cust. service. 30ish min from Bangor.
Three courses: Lynx, which is the best and longest, Bobcat, which is also 18 but shorter, and the 9 hole course, which is all under 200 ft and more of a practice course. The Lynx course is still on the short side, none longer than 600, but provides a good challenge nonetheless. Trees are the main challenge on both 18-hole courses: on literally every hole the fairway is closely hemmed by trees which can quickly turn a throw from a 350 into a 35 (course is very similar to the 2018 European Championship, for reference). This can be fun, but of course frustrating at times. This course will whip you into shape regarding aim, and once your aim is good, it's really very enjoyable. However, it would be nice just to have one long hole with less obstruction where you could just rip one. Prices are very reasonable: $6 for 18, $3 for 9, renting is a couple bucks. Mosquitoes get pretty nasty in the summer, so bring at least 30% DEET,...
Read moreI only played the "shorts" course, but it was very nice. Well kept course with beautiful scenery. Will update after I play the other courses, but from what I saw, I have no doubt it will be positive.
Update I have played all the courses here and they are all great. Some challenging longer holes that snake through the woods, but the fairways are nicely kept and they spread the wood chips from trees that are cut so it is great walking. The staff in the clubhouse are all nice...
