I was visiting the area from Los Angeles and drove an hour from my hotel to experience The Hog Island Oyster Bar, but unfortunately, I left deeply underwhelmed.
Parking & Atmosphere Parking was limited and cramped, tucked along the side of the highway. The staff were friendly in a laid-back, “stoner-vibe” kind of way, but overall the service and atmosphere felt low-effort. It was clear that most of their attention goes into the oysters themselves.
Seating & Service Although I had a reservation, I still waited about 10 minutes—which was reasonable. I was seated at a high-top table right in the sun. While there were plenty of umbrellas, the layout hadn’t been thought through, and the setup was uncomfortable. The table height was awkward, with barely enough room for my knees, and the patio overall felt uninspired despite the ocean view. Water is self-serve, which might fit the casual vibe, but at their price point, it felt out of place.
Food & Drinks The highlight was definitely the oysters. The raw oysters were fresh, briny, and delicious—easily a five-star item, though quite small. The grilled oysters were good but not memorable. The wild king salmon tartar, however, was bland and uninspired; I found myself relying on hot sauce with every bite. I also ordered the pickled vegetables, which were basic. Overall, the menu lacked the creativity and quality expected at their price point. The drink options were solid, and the locally sourced wine I tried was excellent. But the drinks they serve aren’t original—they’re simply reselling them.
Final Impression After finishing my first round, I wanted to order more raw oysters and another drink, but my server never came back as I was cooking beneath the sun. Eventually, I had to walk up to the host stand to pay my check—and even then, they couldn’t provide a working pen. It was a fitting end to an overall “low-effort” dining experience.
In short: the oysters are worth trying, but everything else—service, seating, and the rest of the menu—fell flat. Given the drive and the prices, I left disappointed. If you want their oysters, I’d recommend finding them at a different venue where the experience matches the quality of the food. If you don’t love oysters, this probably isn’t the place for you—there’s very little on the menu to satisfy anyone who isn’t...
Read moreI don't know where would all those positive review coming from. Maybe they came to the different place? But for me the place looks very disappointing The property has very limited space for parking. It is located right on the HWY 1, but there is only little parking available with only valet option. Before I could finally find the place to park on side of HWY1 I had to do 2 u-turns. Then I needed to walk along the highway trying to keep close enough to other parked cars so that they don't hit me, my wife and my children the farm, cafe, picnic area and shop are located on the small piece of the land. Everything looks old, heavily used and dirty. Unpaved floor with few paths between the toilets and entrance to the cafe. There are few old buildings with shop and administrative area as well as few more buildings and strange boxes with water with unclear meaning. Empty oyster shells lay in the big container. There is nowhere to go around, neither the property nor the neighborhood give any opportunity to explore this side of Tamales bay. Cafe and picnic area are located outside and look like a couple of uncovered raw tables with benches placed straight into the raw ground. There is not even mention about proper sanitary state of that place. The strong cold winds are common at this area and there is no way to hide from them. My reservation time was in 7 minutes when I came to administrator desk. Tired looking lady checked the list of bookings and told me that I came too early and have to sit on the bench to wait until exactly scheduled time comes. The waiter took my credit card and went away with it to swipe before even accepting the order. Menu is very simple - raw oysters, grilled oysters and some simple snacks at the price of top restaurant downtown San Francisco. I don't know why the prices are so high, but when I finally got at the table I had no appetite to do my meal There are few much better places along HWY1 in Point Reyes station where you can try fresh oysters at a lower price and mush more...
Read moreQuick Summary Book your reservation ASAP (they release 30 days in advance). We got really lucky and got seated off waitlist. The picnic tables offer a great view and the BBQ oysters are the dish of choice here. They offer to-go but the oysters aren't shucked. Great experience but definitely plan ahead. Tip: the smaller oysters are actually much tastier than the large oysters (Whether that's the raw or BBQ oysters)
Food- 4.5 stars BBQ oysters- these were fantastic. Cooked in butter, these oysters packed so much flavor. If you're with a large party, snag the smaller oysters on the dish (they have way much more flavor)
Raw oysters- I'm usually more of a fan of raw oysters, but I was surprised by how the BBQ oysters outclassed the raw oysters. The raw oysters still had a lot of flavor but my complaint was with the inconsistency. Basically half the oysters were decent and the other were very good.
Peach salad- this was pretty good to balance out the oysters. Wouldn't mind ordering again to get some fiber, acidity and balance to all the oysters we were eating
Halibut Crudo- this was pretty good as well. It's solid, but the BBQ oysters took the show
Service- 4 stars I did feel a bit understaffed here. The waiters were running around and exhausted towards the end of lunch hour. Expect a wait for your food and drinks.
Value- 3 stars You're coming to the OG Hog Island location for the experience of eating outdoors with a view. Besides the BBQ oysters, I'm not sure what you can find better here compared to their other locations. In fact, you're probably going to get better dining quality at the SF location (excluding the BBQ oysters since those aren't available there)
Bottom Line It's a fantastic dining experience at the OG Hog Island the BBQ oysters were unforgettable. But not sure if I will go back due to the inconsistency of the...
