It’s generally a pretty good rink. Seemed a bit overly strict during COVID fear but at least we could play. It would be nice if they updated the benches/boards so they don’t seem so much like practice arena benches with nowhere to put water bottles or anything else, but we make it work. One of the rinks (right side walking in) the visiting bench needed some maintenance work the last time we were there. Hopefully they’ve fixed all that. Aside from that, the only other thing I can think of to make sure to note- is that the way they label their locker rooms can be really confusing. If you’ve been there and know the layout somewhat it’s not the worst place- but every time we go here we have at least 1/4-1/2 the team that is wandering around the wrong area looking for our room. Usually we try to fix this ourselves by having the coaches wait at the bottom of the steps.
We’ve had some really questionable games with refs who don’t understand the game, but there’s only so much the rink has to do with that- and you’ll run into inconsistency everywhere. I do wish they would warn you if you’re going to have a game with trainer/trainee referees though. We’ve had it happen here more than anywhere else combined. It doesn’t look very professional, and often times you can count on the majority of calls to be wrong one way or another. I understand it’s necessary for young refs to learn... it just seems like the training phase needs more work- and possibly to be limited to younger/rec league games. Ideally ones that are early in the season and don’t...

THE REASON FOR THE HIGH REVIEWS IS DUE TO PREVIOUS LOCAL OWNERSHIP!!!
Do NOT trust the so-called “local guide” who goes to one public skate and likes the now mid-experience. These “people” do not feel the effects as terribly as people who continually go to this rink to develop Figure Skating or Ice Hockey. Youth athletics is at risk to arbitrary price increases and this company (Black Bear) prices out people who can’t afford these ridiculous charges.
A rink that was once the towns hub for casual, competitive, and professional development turned into a sterile-corpo junk rink. Any serious athlete wanting to develop their skills and performance will be seriously affected.
Private Equity destroys local scenes and discourages the expansion of a wonderful experience, driving out lower income families. It is a tragedy that the Ann Arbor Ice cube is now under Black Bear. Honestly it’s a miracle Perani’s is still there thankfully.
Rinks should not be changing once highly affordable prices to ridiculous ranges to make a smaller profit while losing more customers.

Read moreI signed up for their Adult Learn to Skate membership online, and when I went to actually register for classes, I found that the classes were already full. I called beforehand asking if there were any spots open, and they said that there were. I called asking for a refund the next day but they wouldn't offer it, and just said to wait the spring. What if I was unavailable for the spring though? While I'm upset about not receiving a refund from this expensive place, I'm not surprised and already figured. My real issue is that you have to pay the membership to see the availability of the classes. When you try to look at them from a non-member account, you get "Not available to Non-members." I had to call and check which they said it was still open. Someone could have taken the spot right before me, I get that. It's just annoying that at most places, as long as you make an account you have access to see if there are spots still left before paying for the membership and...
