I feel this is almost the quintessential waterfall-in-the-woods experience. (Please see below for safety info before setting out for a visit.) If you choose a not too hot or cold day, add in a good dose of clouds, you may feel the same way.
I visited the place a few weeks ago on a late afternoon as the rain of the day was diminishing. As many other reviewers say, it is picturesque and has several sections. What makes it special, is that it is relatively secluded and there is a near-wild feel to this area, even though you are not too far from civilization.
And herein is where you need to be careful and the reason I'm choosing not to give 5 stars. If you are doing this solo, take all the usual hiking precautions. (Assume you won't have cell reception. Be prepared for rough terrain. Be prepared to respond to wildlife.) If you're in or near the falls you'll have a hard time hearing anything else or being heard at all. Really nice, but not without risks. The ground is loose and covered in pine needles - I slipped (in good boots) more than once - so don't be afraid of using a staff/ walking stick/ poles. Also, as with all natural water bodies, slippery rocks are a big danger, so just assume this when you're navigating anywhere near or in the water.
As some other reviewers have noted, the parking is limited. Parking is also relatively dangerous as the road and nearby parking areas are unusually steep and not in good condition. I had trouble with a medium size vehicle. There is a good drop off at the edge of the road and parking spots don't seem to have guard rails. So even 4 wheel drives are not exempt from danger.
Therefor, even though I recommend this location, be aware exploration of this little gem doesn't turn into the quintessential definition of...
Read moreButtermilk Falls in Plymouth, CT is a tucked-away gem that feels like a true adventure. The entrance is hidden along a steep, winding road through a quiet neighborhood—unmarked and easy to miss. Once you find it, you’ll follow a forest path and the sound of rushing water to reach the falls.
This stop rates a 7 out of 10 for difficulty. The trail is narrow, uneven, and the best views are from a steep ridge, so be careful and wear proper footwear. It’s wild, beautiful, and less traveled—perfect for those looking to get off the beaten path and into...
Read moreStopped by Buttermilk falls for the first time in a few years and it has gone downhill. Parking is very limited to a single car pull off on the side of a steep street. The parking area and trail had liter scattered throughout, which we picked up what we did see. The falls themselves are on the smaller side and some of that is due to the flow of Hancock Brook.
Overall if you are in the area it's worth checking out but I would not travel a great distance to visit ...
