About 8 or so years ago I was served a Kentucky made Prosciutto at Jean Farris Winery outside of Lexington, KY. Everything about it impressed me so much that I have never forgotten it. That Prosciutto is produced by this Family!!!! We just had the opportunity to stop here today and "Wow"!!!!!! We walked into an unassuming country store to what must be one of the top Prosciutto hams in the world. We were greated by a Lady, Nancy, whom much reminded me of my own grandmother. She had an incredible knowledge of ham production and the history of the Newsome Family products. This ham.....this Prosciutto was in the case whole. They cut a few sample bites of both the Country ham and the Prosciutto. The Country ham was quite impressive as most are almost to salty. This one was very well balanced with salt and smoky flavors. The Prosciutto though was an incredible product. The moisture level was perfect. You can see how it glistens and shines in the pictures. To the touch it was the texture of softened butter and the fats melted away in your mouth. The thin slices of joy were so tender and precious. They also keep some cantaloupe on the counter cut into pieces to enjoy the ham in a traditional fashion. There were many other products in the store but I was to overwhelmed but the Prosciutto to notice much else. We will be going back and so should you. We bought 2 pounds to take with us but I will buy a whole one soon. They are the only Americans that have been invited to the World Ham Congress in Spain and one of their hams is in the Jamòn Museum there. That is no small thing as Spain is the recognized ham center of the world. Perfección...
Read moreThis is a wonderful, Old-fashioned, Family-operated little Country Store hidden in downtown Princeton Kentucky. They are known internationally for decades of producing extremely high-quality smoked hams. Delicious does not even begin to describe the taste. Plus they have the eclectic mix of items you would expect to find in a typical small country store. They also offer their own line of candy & soft drinks. The root beer is my favorite, but they have more than a dozen other flavors. Everywhere you turn there is something interesting to see. And I must say... the folks we met who run the store were extremely friendly and extremely knowledgeable about all of the products in the store. As a family business that has been open for decades, the owners told us several entertaining stories about the business and their products. It was a surprisingly awesome way to spend well over an hour of our afternoon. If you live there, go there. You can also order their world-famous Hams online for delivery. The quality of their products is outstanding. The prices of their products are surprisingly low. Along with the typical merchandise, there are cool items of all types for sale everywhere you look. I highly recommend going to Princeton, KY. and visiting Newsom's Hams and...
Read moreWe stopped by Newsom’s Hams Old Mill Store on a Saturday afternoon, and I’m still thinking about it. I ordered the Preacher ham sandwich with horseradish cheese, and I’m not exaggerating, it was the best ham sandwich I’ve ever had, and easily in the top three sandwiches of my life. And I’m not even a ham guy. That smoked ham was packed with flavor, and the horseradish cheese gave it just the right kick.
The store itself is a treasure trove. We walked around and picked up preserves, sauces, relishes, and eye-catching bottles of hot sauce and barbecue sauce. The deli menu is full of options, and everything looked worth trying. The service was friendly and helpful, and the overall vibe was like a Cracker Barrel if it were the real deal, authentic, local, and full of history. You can just feel it in the building and see it in the photos on the wall.
No complaints here. Just a strong urge to go back and grab a full pound of that Preacher ham. Newsom’s is absolutely worth the trip if you’re anywhere...
