I am a volunteer here. We recently had the joy of fostering a puppy for two weeks - we successfully potty trained, introduced kennel training, taught the puppy commands and worked on socializing/building her confidence. We told the shelter they could move forward with an application that came in for our foster puppy, but quickly realized we made a huge mistake. The potential adopters hadn’t met the puppy yet, and we begged the Humane Society to let us keep her. They were firm to tell us no, but ultimately bent the rules for the potential adopters - allowing them to do a home visit outside of Adam’s County. Considering the potential adopters hadn’t met her yet, we are disappointed and heart broken they didn’t give us some grace. We would have loved to give her a forever home and continue helping her grow into a confident dog.
Through out my time fostering, there was a lack of organization/communication at the Humane Society. They pushed back our foster puppy’s vaccinations four times. They do not currently have a vet, so I hope things will improve once they are fully staffed. Unfortunately, our foster puppy had to spend a week at the shelter before her home visit because of the shelter’s miscommunications regarding the spay. Going back to the shelter must have been confusing and scary for her, and it breaks my heart to think she could have been safe and happy with us instead.
Overall, the staff does a good job and cares about the animals. However, I do wish that there had been a bit more compassion and understanding in our situation. It’s been a tough experience, and I’m feeling pretty...
Read moreWe have had both positive and negative experiences here. Got a puppy 8 years ago and we had to wait almost two weeks before hearing back if we were able to adopt her, we finally heard back and were able to pick her up. She started nipping my daughter a few years later so I called to see if they had any suggestions... The told me to bring her in. I let them know that she had hip problems and had since the day we got her... they took her to the back and practically laid on her hips, she was screaming in pain and trying to nip them... they forced a muzzle on her then told me they were going to KILL her because she was the most aggressive dog they had ever seen... I took my dog home and worked with her ourselves. Our dog has never bitten anyone and we have not had a single issue since. I'm still very sad at how that situation was handled! We got a cat a few years back and we only had to wait a few hours to see if we could adopt her.. unlike the pup who we waited weeks for! The cat had worms severely and they failed to tell us. we took her back in for a treatment, which was supposed to be put in the middle of her shoulder blades so she couldn't lick it off... the lady put it down her side and she of course licked it off and then got extremely sick. We did NOT take her back there again, we instead took her to our vet and they were absolutely wonderful and got...
Read moreI was at my witts end with some stray cats that come into my yard and up to my door. While a few have disappeared, I still have three that come knocking for me to feed them. How can I turn away a cold and hungry fur baby?? I am overextended because of my 2 indoor cats. Going thru a lot of cat food. While I love these kitties I just can't afford to get the outdoor ones fixed. Hannibal Humane Society suggested I contact the Quincy Humane Society.
The lady I spoke with was so completely a breath of fresh air, and so friendly! I was told I will get a call back to go over the details and whatnot but yes the QHS will help you get your outside stray cats fixed!
This is wonderful news because, while I love animals (definitely cats), I just don't have the room or money to take on the stray cats in the neighborhood. If I can get the help to get them fixed then that's less cats in the neighborhood. Living on a fixed income, I can't take on the responsibility of owning them. Its sooooo hard to turn them away everyday. If I can get the 3 cats fixed then I won't have the worry about finding even more strays and doing this all over again.
Thank you so much QHS! You are going to help keep the pet...
