The most unpleasant experience I’ve ever had golfing in San Diego. Nice course, unfortunately the marshal made it feel like we were playing a muni. On our 8th hole we were a 1/2 hole behind the group in front of us because our group had some trouble on the 7th hole. Bill, the marshal, pulled up and told us to pick up the pace and keep up with the group in front of us. We pointed out that the group behind us was nearly 2 holes back and told him we weren’t holding anybody up. He told us “that’s not the point”. I think it’s Bill that missed the point. We argued with him for a couple minutes but he wasn’t interested in our point of view. He made us so infuriated it ruined the rest of our round. It’s upsetting to think we paid for this unnecessary frustration. Golf is frustrating enough as it is.
We finished the front 9 in just under 2 hours but ended up waiting on the 10th tee with the group in front of us because the group in front of them was still in the fairway. Where was Bill to speed them along? We were the 3rd group out in the morning - no one was in front of them. The remainder of the round didn’t improve as we waited on every single hole. There was never a group behind us waiting for us though. Bill’s job is to be a player ambassador and make sure the golfers are having a great experience to make us want to come back. Seems like Bill misinterpreted his job responsibilities as he had the opposite effect on us. I’m not going back for a long time, if ever. Our group’s indexes are 7, 7, 8 and 13 - this was the first time I’ve ever been asked to pick up the pace. It’s unfortunate how one person can ruin an entire outing and leave such a bad impression while the rest of the staff we interacted with were completely professional.
Good luck playing there- just don’t play too fast where you have to wait on every hole, and if you play at an enjoyable pace just hope Bill...
Read moreLove it to golf here! Steele Canyon is one of the challenging courses in San Diego county. It’s a course designed by the legendary Gary Player in Jamul Cali, I love the course layouts and the architecture of itself. I have golf at many of Gary Players design courses and other as well, this is by far one of the many that golfers must play course. It allows you to think of your shot placement before pulling your trigger for your next approach either to the next fairway or on the green. The spectacular view of the mountain scenery in almost every holes on the course, it reminds me of a similar course in the City of Thousand Oaks “ Lost Canyon “ golf club which no longer exists and the dance floor is in a good condition as it should be in almost every holes, I would advice to the starter please remind every players to repair their ball mark on the green so everyone of us may have a chance to play at a some what perfect green conditions. The green itself is not extremely fast but the undulations of it make you think twice for your putting. Over all the staff members in the club house are very helpful and genuine nice, and professional.

Read moreFirst time here and left with very mixed feelings. Greens were mostly excellent (minus people not fixing ball marks and littering on some) but fairways were extremely patchy. Doesn’t seem like they overseed so you’re looking at extremely tight and uneven fairway lies. Some bunkers were like concrete and others were too soft and fluffy. Good variety of tees for different levels of players, and quite challenging from the back. The Ranch side is more scenic than the Vineyard side.
Unfortunately the clientele ultimately put me off the most. I expected better for the greens fees we paid, but outside the clubhouse was full of loud, smoking, drunks. I actually witnessed someone shout “f-ggot” at someone else and then repeatedly insult a pregnant woman who was with her baby. I can now imagine who was leaving cigarette butts and sunflower seeds on the greens. We high tailed it out of there pretty quickly. For the price, I’d rather play somewhere a bit classier and...
