I stopped at this Welcome Center during my cross-country trip this past August. I want to say that DEAN should get an award. He saw me peek into the large room and he welcomed me in and asked about my trip. When I confirmed I'd planned to stay at Wind Cave National Park and then go on to Yellowstone, he armed me with the most valuable information I could never have gotten with just a book or a map. He recommended a stop in Chamberlain to see Dignity and the Lewis and Clark exhibit, which I did. He explained a road closure near Wind Cave and showed me the best route to get to the campground. He recommended a drive through Spearfish Canyon which was remarkable. He even provided me with directions to Devils Tower and made a recommendation for my route to Yellowstone, which, based on experience with the rest of his recommendations, I followed to the letter. I loved my tour of South Dakota and it is high on my list for next summer. I was so impressed with the welcome this State has created for its tourists, and the knowledge of its guides, personified by Dean, I will...

What really stood out was how friendly the staff was. One of them offered to take our picture, which I truly appreciated since I was traveling solo with two kids and my arm is only so long for selfies in front of such an extraordinary backdrop.

Overall, a wonderful first stop in South Dakota —...
